Actually the phrase is "the best thing since sliced bread".

It's a woman actually.
If you want to be really anal, it's "the greatest thing since sliced bread". But variations are allowed. Nobody will be killed for changing a word.

"Next thing since sliced bread" doesn't make any sense. What does it mean?

Actually, someone could get killed if you changed the word 'innocent' to 'guilty'.

I will always want to download my emails onto a local machine via pop3 or whatever replaces it. I don't want to have to rely on being able to get online to check old emails.

Or if you ordered your gran an 'electric' chair instead of a 'wheel' chair.

Wasn't clear I meant variations of this particular phrase, huh?

It means nothing, but neither do a lot turns of phrase if you analyse them.

Eventually, there will be no case of being "offline". Everything will be hosted, and we will simply be sitting at terminals.
