blame it on ps3 and xbox360

i don't think its about ppl losing interest in overclocking/moding their hardware. u can still do a lot.

ppl used to check on hardware sites every day for leaked x800 cores or geforce 6 pictures.

Another part of the reason, is back in the day imo, hardware performance was struggling to keep up with software needs.
Software was always a head of hardware and always needed more more more.

Today, hardware has vastly outstripped what software needs and software is having a hard time keeping up with what is available.

I think that some of this might also be due to the costs. Back in the day, components were crazy expensive even for midrange products, thus hard for hardware to keep up with software. Today, products are much cheaper than what they used to be and it is still advancing just as fast.
4 cores is still used very limited and look, now we have 6 cores for as low as $200.
Then look at when the Barton 3200+ came out, it was $450. An Athlon 1400 was $250. I bought a 3200+ A64 back in the day and it was $400!!!
I can get a Phenom 965, motherboard and 4gigs of memory for that much money!
