lol @ the call girl cards. A friend of mine brought some of those back when he went there, so yes I am familiar. It sounds like there's quite a bit of street hassling going on, although hopefully I'll avoid any rough patches.
I'm staying at the MGM Grand in a Bungalow Suite, going Monday-Friday in May. Squartum, word on the small casinos, I'll have to check them out. As for tips, I'm always a pretty generous tipper, but any recommendation on tip amounts would be appreciated. I was thinking maybe $3 tips on drinks, but not sure if this is too generous or too light. Is it worth it to tip bigger on the first set of drinks (say $5-10) and then lower after that ($2-3), or should you just pick a tip amount and stick to it. Also what's the typical tip at restaurants and buffets? I usually tip about 20-25% depending on the quality of service. |

My wife and I just went and stayed at the MGM Grand in a suite in Tower 2 I think it was. Her work sent us so it didn't cost us much. To be quite honest I am not a big gambler and I don't drink so I was rather bored the whole time. The city is cool looking at night. The bellagio water show is cool (best viewed at night with the lights). Her work also gave us real good tickets to the show KA which is at the MGM but I didn't go. She said it was pretty good though. Emerils restaurant was REALLY good. You should try that one night (it is in the mgm grand).

It sounds like there's quite a bit of street hassling going on, although hopefully I'll avoid any rough patches. As for tipping, I always had the best luck with dropping her a 5 spot (as long as you plan to sit here for a while) or so early on and then slowing down on the tips after that, a dollar or two is fine. Tipping for restaurants is the same as most places don't feel like you need to tip extra. When it comes to buffets don't feel like you need to tip huge at all. Your buffet server will simply bring you drinks and clear plates, no need to be overly generous with the tips. Are you renting a car while there? You won't have to worry about really any overly sketchy places if you stay on the main strip. The further north you go (read: past the Wynn) you will start to run into sketchier territory. The real shady areas are the east/northeast side of the city. And as a tourist there is really no need to ever go to these areas. Just don't do anything stupid. You will go to jail and/or get your a$$es kicked. Don't carry a ton of cash on you. Stay in the well lit areas, at least somone might hear you scream, and care. The locals see you coming from a mile away. Most importantly in all of it have fun! There aren't many places around that you can walk around outside completely trashed and not be looked at and judged by other people. It is a surreal feeling walking around the strip drunk and just shooting **** with anybody that cares to vest any interest in you [thumbup] The majority of them are a lot of fun and will make your experience that much better. The last time I visited about 8 months ago I was drunk and overheard some Irish guys talking and misunderstood what they said, I then proceeded to threaten the three of them that I would punch them all in the jaw if they said that "Vegas girls are classy." In reality they said "trashy" all three of the guys that were a solid 6 inches taller and 75 pounds heavier than I was just looked at me and laughed until the one grabbed me and just dragged me along with them as they walked for a while because they liked my bluntness and wanted to show me how easy it was to pick up girls with an Irish accent [stupid] |

Just got back from my trip on Friday. Awesome time and thanks for the advice ladies and gents.
Some of my perceptions and experiences- - Good lord the weather is nice there. It was 90 degrees everyday, sunny, and felt perfect whether it was during the day or at night. - The dudes handing out prostitute cards were so annoying. I can't believe how aggressive they were with families, let alone the fact that anyone would bring their family to the strip. - I only got a chance to go to 1 nightclub and a few lounges. I went to Studio 54, and it was OK. I liked the addition of go-go girls on podeums, but otherwise it was nothing I hadn't seen before in big cities I've lived in, and I've definitely seen better. I wanted to hitup Moon at the Palms, but my companions weren't too keen on it. One of the lounges I went to, however, was The Mix at THE HOTEL in Mandalay Bay. It was absolutely pro, 65 floors up, leather couches and perfect mood lighting with an open-air glass balcony that had a view of the entire strip and most of Las Vegas. Very cool. - Sheesh, it is way too easy to gamble there. I didn't want to do much of it at all, but just a little nudge from my brother and cousin and I was at a slot machine again dumping money away. They really set you up with all the hotels you have to walk through and all the shops each one includes. - Vegas was all-together a lot of fun, but it seems ideal for a 3 night / 4 day trip (I went for 4 days, 5 nights) with a mix of weekend and week days. It also seems better for couples, bachelor/bachelorette parties, and single men. I went with my cousin and my brother, all of us being in serious relationships. The atmosphere just makes you want to be either devious or cutesy, whichever's more convenient. Can't believe how many times I heard the following- WATER ONE DOLLA ONE DOLLA, COLDEST WATER YOU'VE EVER HAD ONE DOLLA ONE DOLLA FREE GIRLS MAN! I GOT ALL DA HOES MAN! would definitely do it again. I liked staying at the MGM Grand, although the Mirage, Bill's Gambling Hall and Casino, the Luxor, and Mandalay Bay would be on my shortlist. |

Sorry I caught this so late. I live here and had some advice. I guess for anyone else who plans on coming here, remember that it is a regular town with normal grocery stores and stuff. Don't waste your money getting drunk at bars and clubs.
The best thing to do is go to the grocery store and buy some alcohol there to bring to your room. Get started there and finish off out in the casinos. Otherwise you waste a ton of money. |

I'll be going to Las Vegas for the first time in May with my brother and cousin (all of us over 21). I've done a lot of research and talking with people, but I'm curious as to what peoples thoughts are here on stuff to see/do, recommendations, etc, etc
So for those of you that have been, lets here it |

Click click, click click, click click, click click, click click....AAAAAAAAARRRRGGHHHHHH!!!! But in all seriousness. Where are you staying? If you are staying on the strip don't bother gambling in the major casinos. Hit the small ones in between. They have cheaper tables so you can gamble longer than your normally would at a major casino and on top of that the dealers and people are far friendlier and are actually interested in conversing with you and helping you if needed. If you sit at a table gambling for a bit you will get served free drinks a lot faster than sitting at the slots (which are a waste of time as far as I'm concerned), when the cocktail waitress does get you your drinks don't be a creep to her and tip her well. The skeezy guys that try and hit on her will not get as good of service and with a good tip she will be sure to come back. Hit Rehab at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino, its Sunday mornings I believe (its been a few years)and is a huge pool party with loads of women. If you are into hiking or anything like that check out Red Rock. And finally drink a lot of water, its extremely dry there and you will get crazy dehydrated without realizing it. Though when drinking it really helps to get that drunkenness going a lot quicker [thumbup] Hope that all helps, I lived there for a while so that is all what I have learned. Any more questions etc feel free to PM me. |
