I've never seen a gold plated one, but googled it and found this on a amazon.com "Gold plated ferrule prevents corrosion and provides for maximum protection of the fiber tip."

What else are they going to use? Silver? Nickel?

Plastic?
Exactly, that is all that is needed. As long as the ends are firmly seated and the cable is not damaged there is absolutely zero difference in the audio quality.

I've got one. It came with something I bought and makes absolutely no difference to a plastic one.

I bought a 3m gold plated one cos it was cheaper than the normal plastic one.

I wouldn't have bought it otherwise

Plastic?

Aww jeah, posting at 11:11.
I've actually never seen a plastic one, I wonder why? Maybe the connection needs to be thinner than plastic allows?

if it serves no real purpose and costs more than you could possibly imagine it must be monster cable.
