.....

Don't know about you, but I don't reserve 400Gb for the recycle bin

And it's not a mac, and he has a really slow internet connection, it'd take forever to redownload it all.

Download Recuva (free software):
http://www.piriform.com/recuva/download

Assuming the drive isn't badly damaged or you haven't overwritten it with lots of data, you should be OK. Although you may need a similar sized HD to restore the data to.

Agreed, I don't see what being a mac has to do with making it hard to recovery data.

As long as no data wiping tools were in play of course.

I know, that is why I was confused. I lent a firewire HDD to a classmate in college that was in HFS format and they ended up formatting it on their PC. I ran some recovery software and got all my data back.

It's a myth these days that a Mac can't recover data. Often this myth is kept going by Mac support themselves to con you into taking it into a store to pay $$$ for a recovery. If you're savvy though it should never be an issue.

Back on topic, just make sure your system isn't writing any data to that drive. Otherwise the odds of your old data being overwritten increases exponentially.

I've used this program in the past to recover deleted files, it works brilliantly.
