Default Trying to decide if this was a bad idea
Booked flights and hotel for a trip to Milan a little over 2 weeks from now. Hotel costs are non-refundable (as is the flight I guess as its with Ryanair).

Got a horrible feeling this is going to cost me

What do you mean "all those expensive holidays"? Last time we went away was Nov last year to Bali (our main holiday of 2009). This is just a 4-day trip to Milan as we need a break.

Milan = doable by car.

Stop crying.

[rofl]

Few problems with that:

1) I only have four days. That would be just enough time to get to Milan, then turn straight round and come back again.
2) Don't have a car.

Hate driving in Holland. Too many cars for the road network.

My office is 10mins from my house. My wifes office is 5mins away. We save a TON of money by not having to run a car.

I agree with car costs, but then you live wrong side of country.

be glad you didnt have to take a flight for serious business, like a funeral or wedding to attend.. You have a good life. Don't forget it.

I can't see this situation carrying on for that long. Surely they're going to have to come up with some kind of solution? Having all aeroplanes grounded for that long would have extreme consequences.

Also, don't you have travel insurance?

Unfortunately, most insurance policies don't cover the effects of natural disasters. Thankfully, mine does.

I don't know what you can do Chris? Are the rooms non-refundable due to advance payment? Could you not add travelling time to either end of the four days and hire a car?

i could be confused, but from what I remember, isn't everything in Europe pretty much 1 day away by train? It isn't a perfect solution, and would eat 2 full days of your time off... but 2 days in milan is better than no days, right?

You wouldnt need that long to get to Milan, since you would drive the main part of the trip on german highways. And since there are no holiday here the roads should be relatively free...

AAAND you could always rent a nice car. Or use an overnight train (where you can sleep in the waggon), so you wouldnt even lose a day.

So, in the end this thread should have been closed after this post:
