Default LOTR on Blu Ray... woot!
You heard right folks, the LOTR trilogy is finally out on Blu Ray!

I went straight to JBs to get my copy yesterday, and it's amazing! But sadly there is a bit of a reality check:
  1. They are just the cinematic versions, as the full extended editions may not make it until next year. So die hard fans will have to wait a little longer for those.
  2. The video transfer quality, whilst being devilishly impressive, is not the best we've seen on BluRay. It gets a solid 4 out of 5 on most Blu Ray review sites, and comparing the 3 films TFOTR is actually below the following 2 in terms of HD quality.
Still, that said; it's amazing to see in 1080p! The sound quality is spectacular, presented in 6.1 DTS-HD and it really skaes the room, and despite the minor shortcomings of the video transfer (for which, to be honest, only die hard video-philes will pick up on) it packs a serious punch in your HD movie lineup. Each film contains a full set of DVD special features, but once again, you will have to wait until the Extended Edition set comes out to really take advantage of all the extra bits and pieces New Line is intending to offer with this trilogy.

Well as for me, I am off and wont be back for 9 hours and 20 minutes! [thumbup]

Saw the preorders for this on Amazon quite a while back.

People have heavily reviewed it as 1 star because people are not happy it was only released as the theatrical release.

This review i think best summed up why it's getting such a poor review.

Some confusion among other reviewers that somehow we're obligated to post a five star recommendation for the movie. This is an incorrect understanding of the review process. If I were reviewing the movie itself it would get a five. This review is for the product, as listed--in other words, I DO NOT RECOMMEND BUYING THIS PRODUCT/DVD. This product is being created FOR NO OTHER REASON than to dupe people into buying this movie twice...again. Those of us who were huge fans bought the original DVDs of the theatrical releases. THEN the studio FINALLY released the extended editions, even though they could have released both at the same time. Now that Blu Ray has won the High Def battle, the studios are salivating at screwing us all again the same way!

Please do not let them get away with pretending that Blu Ray can't hold both versions on one disc--it certainly can! A simple menu option would let you watch the Extended Edition when you have time, or Theatrical Edition when you don't.
I will only buy the extended version of this movie on Blu-ray.

I have watched the extended versions and to be honest its nothing special IMO. Im wanting to get the trilogy next week when I get paid. Im glad to hear that the sound is great, seeing how I wanna put it to the test with my Denon 790, Klipsch speakers and my polk audio 10" sub!! (neighbors beware)

I personally was never a very big fan of the Lord of the Rings series but I was looking forward to them being released on BD for a fantastically high end AV feast. It is great to hear that the 5.1 DTS-HD track (with matixed surround center) sounds so good but with the titles coming out so late, the transfer should be close to flawless.

Don't get my wrong, I have plenty of BD titles in my collection that people think I am crazy for having but they also don't seem artificially starved of attention in mastering. http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/My-Cou...-Blu-ray/5515/ This seems like it was done intentionally, as the HD broadcast version is arguably better. http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1237167

[yes]

Once you've seen the extended trilogy, nothing else will do.

Waiting for a remastered extended version which I guess will be around the time of The Hobbit movies.

This Blu Ray version looks just as bad as the one they put on Sky Movies HD a while back.
