I thought
I took it that he was dead too. I think it just took a long time for him to die. He got shot in the gut at point blank range, in a world without surgeons.

but...he was "protected" by God until his mission was complete, which was to bring the word of God to the people....

I love movies that leave it to the viewer to decide what happened, best kind of endings.
