Default Going cold turkey.
So I have about 2 smokes left before I'm out. And I plan to be done for good. I've done this before, but trying to find new tactics to go at it this time. One I wanna try is convincing my self that withdraws feel fantastic. Hoping this one works. For you other onions that managed to make it cold turkey what were some you used? Need some small ideas just to help out a little. I completely disbelieve in using substitutes, because clearly you can't get the nicotine out while putting more into your self.

The best and most effective way to quit smoking is to want to.

I quit 3 years ago, after many many attempts previously and the only way I was able to finally do it was to just want to do it.

Breathing is nice, not hacking up brown crud is nice, not having brown fingers and teeth is very nice.

Just decide to want to be done with them, and do it.

Good luck, be strong.

I've been quit about 5 years now, my tips are

1) Try to quit with someone else.

2) I know it sounds silly but don't take more money out with you than you need for Food/Drinks during the day, that way you can't buy cigs.

3) For the first month or so stay away from people smoking and try to change your normal routine. I always smoked after eating and driving to or from work instead I started to chew normal sugar free gum.

4) You will get a cough and/or feel shitty this is normal.

5) Learn how to relax, you will have problems sleeping

6) Start trying to keep fit, your metabolism is going to slow right down. I went from 60kg up to 86kg

7) Thinks of something to spend all your saved money on.

8) After 6 months you can feel all smug that you actually did it.

I did not use patches or any nicotine substitutes.
it's tough going but it's worth it not to stink![thumbup]

This.

I did the same as most people and made a few half-hearted attempts to quit, but then i decided one day that enough was enough (the doctor saying i had the lungs of a 45 year old at age 19 will **** you up!). Destroy all cigarettes and lighters that you have. Bin them. Also, try and avoid the pub for a few weeks.

You're gonna feel like **** for a while but that's normal. After a few weeks it will start getting easier, but don't ever be temted to have 'just the one'.

Get some films or games to keep you entertained for a couple of weekends, so you aren't tempted to go out.

You will probably put on weight, i went from 10 stone to 14 stone within a year.

You will start getting your sense of taste back after a while. Some foods will start tasting amazing and you will also go off other stuff you used to like.

Save the money you used to spend on cigarettes. Before you know it you can buy yourself something and realise how much money you were wasting. I started buying a lot of electronics and was amazed how much i had been wasting on destroying my health!

Quitting cigs is easy as hell in comparison to other substances as far as physical dependence goes. The only way anyone can quit anything is truly wanting to quit. Personally I quit 2 times once cold turkey and the other with the patch. If I was smoking again and wanted to quit I would use the patch again as it worked great for me and helped with the physical part of withdrawals from smoking.

Everytime you have an urge for a cigarette, smash your head against the corner of a desk.

You will be better in no time.

Good luck. I quit back in the middle of June, and while I did cheat some the next couple weekends (because I was practically bored out of my mind) I did have the willpower to completely quit after that. I get the urge occasionally, but it's easy to ignore now.

You just have to really want it!

i have never smoked, but I did chew tobacco for a while. I literally started doing it because I wondered why people that smoke had such a problem quitting. I did it for about 6 months, using fairly large amounts. Bought the kinds that are in pouches because I couldnt stand having tobacco stuck in my teeth and running down my face after spitting all the time. I basically tried to force an addiction. at first 1 pouch at a time was all I could stand, any more and I would puke after about 10 minutes. eventually worked up to doing 3 or 4 pouches at a time and going through about a can a day. I figured in the end I would just put in down and walk away with no trouble. I never had issues with weight gain, but I did have cravings and headaches. I would literally taste the flavor in my mouth if I went more than about 8 hours without it. I could usually make it a couple days before I would give in. So I started buying the non flavored tobacco which tasted like total ass. This helped alot because It went from being something I enjoyed and got positive reinforcement from to being something that i hated and only did enough to get rid of the headaches and cravings. Took me about 3 weeks before I just didnt want to do it anymore. The unflavored kind caused ulcers in my mouth as well, which was a major motivator.

Quitting was harder than I ever expected, but also I dont think I did it long enough to fully develop the kind of addiction that long term high usage smokers develop. I read an article about it before doing my little experiment and nicotine literally replaces the acetilcholine (neurotransmitter in your brain) and over a period of time your body reduces production and will eventually all but quit producing it, as your body no longer needs it. when quitting it takes time for your body to adjust back to having to make it again, and takes a very long time to get back to normal production.

Now if only I could get my pancreas to work again if i weened myself off my insulin!!! Think I will hold off on that little experiment [surrender]

Good for you! Keep at it and just imagine all the money saved from staying away from it.
