So, the phone is schedule for release on Verizon in Spring 2010. Will Google also bring us a CDMA unlocked phone?
I am a Verizon user, but am thinking that I might get the unlocked version, with the possibilities of adding it to Verizon later. I have a Google Number, so will just use that. The fact that I already have a Google Number, I don't need Verizon service on it until income increases. Better option than getting a Skype Number plus a plan. BTW, what GPU does the Nexus One have? |

CDMA + unlocked doesn't make any sense. The objective of an unlocked phone is for you to be able to take your SIM card and put it in the phone, no matter what SIM it is. In the future (i.e. for LTE) Verizon and other CDMA carriers' phones will have SIM cards but for now no such luck. Nokia tried to float a standard a while back (R-UIM) but no US carriers picked it up because they don't make money competing with each other... They make money locking you into contracts. Chances are that the only way you'll ever be able to get a Nexus One on Verizon is from Verizon.
Coincidentally, or not, most GSM phones also now allow you to operate SIM free so you could conceivably buy them without service and use them as you envision. CDMA... Not so much. I know you prefer to not use Skype, and I also understand that you'd like to use Verizon, but you might be interested to learn that the Nokia N900 has full Skype integration - like your contacts and your Skype contacts are one and you can receive/hold/flash Skype calls while on a network call, etc. It's pretty awesome - you wouldn't know it was Skype vs. a regular call, that's how integrated it is. It also integrates Google Talk although I don't know if it's to the same extent. |

I was more referring to, getting a Nexus One through Google, with the possibilities of taking it into Verizon to add service if I wanted.
So I guess it would be a locked phone? I don't know, just one that supports CMDA. Guess I would just need to buy the Verizon model off ebay and never put service on it. Still pay the $570 or whatever it is. As far as Skype, I like it, just don't know anyone who uses Skype other than some family members. We only use it to video talk as well. I was just thinking Skype cause it is only $90/yr for phone Service, but recently remembered that I have a Google # and that = FREE. Though, I would actually need an APP to use this phone over WIFI with my Google Number, and I don't think that they have an App for that yet? A Google Voice App. Can't place calls online with Voice like I thought you could. Just txt messages. The iPod doesn't have an App for Voice. So maybe I am back to Skype? Could use Skype on the Nexus. I hate the fact that my iPod can't Multitask, especially when the Verizon Droid has pretty much the same hardware and can. Basically have 2 Cell phones, and we are just added to others plans. One phone, we may need to start paying for, so am just looking for ways to save $$ but still have that second phone. |
