You actually own a TV Live? Why? It seems like a pointless peripheral.

  • Completely silent
  • No need for a media server software
  • Plays most movie formats (including MKV)
  • Will have Netflix soon
  • Top notch interface with remote control
  • 1080P upscaling with HDMI
  • FTP server (with third party firmware)
  • Allows me to play my 2TB of media on my HT system across my condo, allowing me (and my guests ) to sit on my couch instead of on a computer chair
  • Allows me to watch BluRay video through my BluRay ROM drive in complete silence
Shall I continue?

Why do you think it is worthless?

I'm fully aware of what it does. However, I can do that entire list (besides the remote control) and more in silence with my computer, while it being in another room and still being physically hooked up to my television. All it took was a 20 dollar HDMI cable and an a hole in a blank wall plate on each side of the wall.

Obviously I benefited from having a convenient apartment setup, however, I would still argue that that there's more versatility in spending a little more for a cheap silent HTPC than spending $150 on this. Of course, that's only an opinion. I was just interested in why you liked it.

I bought it from Best Buy for on sale! [thumbup]

You can use Windows Explorer as the interface. I do not have any storage on the device itself. I have two 1TB drives on media on my desktop and use the file browser in the WD Live to browse my file shares, then directly play them from the drive.

You can do it the other way too. You can connect a HD to the device and share it with the rest of your network the same way.

The only reason that I do not do this is because my drives are Internal SATA drives, otherwise I would.

The on-screen interface is pretty good and quick (if you keep the "menu fade" option off).

Can you build an HTPC for nearly 120USD (the current selling price) that is silent and outputs 1080P? What about operating costs?

What about the interface? Mouse and keyboard? No thank you.

I believe that the remote and GUI are worth the 120USD alone. Not to mention the fact that you can have a low power file server running 24/7.

I can see your point and agree with that, considering the lower selling price. I guess part of my argument is that I already have a large infrastructure of tech in place that I can use to do these things. If that isn't there, then I could see how this would be appropriate.

However, I still distrust the efficacy of such an instrument, as I've had issues with routers I've used handling the bitrates of some of my .mkv's flawlessly. Which is why I ultimately went to lengths to hard wire my computer to the HDTV.

Have you had any problems streaming files 25 Mbps+ with this?

What's the underlying OS?

I am not sure that I have played videos with that bitrate, never paid attention to it. Though, I have a BluRay Rip at 1080P that plays fine. Remember, the decoding is done on the device itself, not through a media server on the PC. It transfers the actual MKV over the network and decompresses it on the fly.

If you are suggesting network issues, they could always be resolved with a direct USB connection to the hard disk, but I have had no issues so far (aside from HAVING to have my computer powered on)

I have NFI. I would assume that it is proprietary though. Check this out:

That is the hacked firmware that I am going to install this weekend.

So it doesn't do internet? Hulu etc...

I have an old 1.4 Duron XP machine hooked up to my tv (which is a crappy 27" CRT.) As you can see my standards are low, but for me to want one it would have to be able to go to websites. Since thats the only tv i have.

Oops, forgot this was about Netflix on the Wii. If my wii wasnt dead and i couldnt already do netflix on my computer, I would be interested.

You can do Hulu through TVersity, but not natively through the device itself.
