Default convictions for things you may do in the future...
Interesting subject.

lets say,the police had a way of detecting a future crime before it was committed, would they have the powers to arrest you for what you may do in the future ?

Or would you say that the Act of the crime is the point where your become prosecutable ?

No, because that is only one outcome and reality. The future can be changed by every turn you make.

Minority Report was an ok film, but would never happen in real life.

If they knew you were going to commit the crime they could simply prevent the crime. No need for jail, just a small fine for the police having to intervene.

Of course since the future isn't set in stone (or so I assume) it's impossible to know the crime will happen for certain.

You've just been watching Paradox haven't you?

Until you've actually committed a crime you are innocent.

Paradox just finished as he was posting, FlashForward hasn't been on since Monday last week, so I'd go with the former. Also Paradox out of the two is the one more concerned with police officers dealing with crimes that have been predicted.

Flashforward also proved you can change the future anyway, so it wont be that

You know the whole thing with the eye and the iris scan in Minority Report? I was very disappointed to hear that it would be unlikely as they already have technology to monitor eye movement when making scans to make sure the eye is attached to the person it should be. They also monitor for pulse when scanning finger print identity. This is because of cases like this...

Police in Malaysia are hunting for members of a violent gang who chopped off a car owner's finger to get round the vehicle's hi-tech security system.

The car, a Mercedes S-class, was protected by a fingerprint recognition system.

The attackers forced Mr Kumaran to put his finger on the security panel to start the vehicle, bundled him into the back seat and drove off.

But having stripped the car, the thieves became frustrated when they wanted to restart it. They found they again could not bypass the immobiliser, which needs the owner's fingerprint to disarm it.

They stripped Mr Kumaran naked and left him by the side of the road - but not before cutting off the end of his index finger with a machete.

I agree. Jail would be unnecessary but charge the person and probably a tracking form if he tries to lie low for a while then do it.

However, realistically how would this be pulled off? Unless you are a really knowledgeable person about crimes and patterns to know if a person will do it or not but to find that out you will have to gather personal information illegally.
