I couldnt believe it today! I drove past a red phonebox in the next village to mine of which has had all the the windows broken, inside full of grafity, filthy, and unlit for years, with the door half hanging off, and the phone not working!

To my surprise I see a BT Openworld van next to it, and fearing the worst, expected to see the phone being removed from it. I was shocked to see the engineer replacing the windows, fitting a new door, and fitting a new light!! [shocked] After he had gone, I visited it again, and tried the phone, but whereas it sort of worked, their is a loud crackling noise on the line! [rolleyes] Oh well, at least the box looks half presentable now. Still needs a good clean and repaint!!

Default Save the Red Phonebox!
If you are a Brit, or an Ex-Patriot, please sign my petition to save all Red Phoneboxes in the UK that have yet to be removed, and keep the phone inside working.

They used to be all over the place before the police had radios, but they're all gone now. That was before my time though.

So are thousands of other things, but that doesn't mean they should disappear. People like them.. they've been around a long time.

I think they're pretty handy actually. Not everyone has enough money to pay for a Cellphone, or what if there's an emergency and your cell is out of batteries?

It's not really that mate, the 'red' phone boxes started disappearing years ago and replaced with fancy modern phone booths that are a bit less prone to vandalism and toilet usage.

It's not that we're removing all public phones but that there are very few of the original red ones left

I agree. Although nearly all of the new ones (BT KX200) Are vandalised moore, as nearly every one I see has had all of its windows smashed! I found a pic of one still untouched and (Quite rarely) Clean!

And a smashed one:

Because they are British icon and part of our heritage. They were designed by the same guy who designed Battersea Power Station (a London landmark) and Bankside Power Station (Tate Modern).

I thought a lot of the remaining red phone boxes were listed? certainly I've been in a few that were, but that was a while ago.

And a smashed one:

Over heare it's the bus shelters that seem to get smashed a lot.
In both cases, I suspect it's largely due to the Police and, more particularly, the Judges just letting the little sh*ts off with little more than a warning and/or a fine - which often doesn't get paid - and/or PD.

Im sure if they'd increase tax to keep these phoneboxes alive because people want to, everyone would talk differently

We wouldnt need to increase Tax! BT can afford to keep all of them, and plenty more!

The signatures are arriving now, lets keep it up! [thumbup]
