Got my SIM Monday, I requested the unlock, and I've just got the text message to say my phone is now officially unlocked!

Default O2 iPhone users, unlock your phone OFFICIALLY!
http://shop.o2.co.uk/update/unlockmyiphone.html

People with contracts get to have their iPhone unlocked immediately (but still have to honour the remainder of their contract) for free, and PAYG customers can get theirs unlocked after 12 months for £14.69.

Because it would be permanent. Who knows how unofficial unlocking will fair with future firmware updates? Also there's less risk if you get it done officially.

Why should PAYG customers have to pay?

I thought the reason PAYG phones were so expensive was because you were buying them outright without carrier subsidy ... As such a PAYG customers owns their phone fully from the time of purchase, like contract customers do at the end of their contract period.

Makes no sense ... Not that I'd leave o2 anyway, been with them forever and am more then happy with their service wouldn't mind an upgrade to a 3Gs though heh

Requested an unlock code two days ago on my 3GS contract which they said I could unlock ok. Just waiting for an unlock code now.

At least doing it the official way it's doesn't matter how many firmware updates are installed, the phone will always remain permanently unlocked.

So does this mean you could officially use an iphone on any network with all the bells and whistles?

I'll probably do it when my contract comes around for renewal, but i've been with O2 (again) since August with the iPhone 3GS and i've got no complaints about their service unlike other networks. [yes]

Well, maybe because I am not the original owner of iphone contract and am on a simplicity tariff.

Well it does say on their site that they will only unlock phones that were bought from them. Does this mean I can get them to permanently unlock the iPhone I bought on eBay (I'm not on O2)?

Oh.

It's free for those on contract; people on PAYG have to pay.

1. Get free o2 sim http://freesim.o2.co.uk/
2. Become o2 customer and ask for iPhone unlock
3. ???
4. Profit!

I have jailbroken my iPhone in the past (not currently running a jailbroken iPhone). But what actually is an 'O2 unlocked iPhone'

Is it exactly the same as a Jailbroken iPhone? Cydia etc?

Unlocking and jailbreaking are different things. Jailbreaking allows you to run apps other than those approved by Apple. Unlocking enables you to use your iPhone on any network, as opposed to just O2 (and now Orange).
