i suppose in Johannesburg you don't have problems with card skimmers anyway. You just wait for someone to withdraw cash, then shoot them.

I'm sure it's not as bad as is sometimes made out. Your still alive for example. I'm sure you still have the worst record for gun crime though. Also, Mr Clarkson talks more **** than almost anyone on the planet. He can be amusing, but mostly a bullshitter.

as of 2008....
"According to the comparison of international crime statistics produced by the UN's Office for Drug Control and Crime Prevention, England and Wales had 9,766 crimes for every 100,000 people in the year 2000. America had 8,517, South Africa 7,997, Germany 7,621 and Russia 2,022.:"

"During the period 1998-2000, Britain went from fifth to fourth worst in the world league table. An analysis of total recorded crime figures before 1998 also suggests that England and Wales have moved sharply up the league table since Labour came to power in 1997. Crimes fell from 5.5 million in 1993 to 4.5 million in 1997. By 1999, total crimes had risen again to 5.3 million."

I used to know someone who was from South Africa and his family emigrated to here because they didn't feel safe. They had to keep a gun around.

It's only because we report crime in the UK. Plus, crime is a big vague. Most crime in the UK are littering or being drunk and swearing at a policeman.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crime_in_South_Africa

Crime is a prominent issue in South Africa. South Africa has a high rate of murders, assaults, rapes, and other crimes compared to most countries.

More than 25% of South African men questioned in a survey admitted to raping someone

your same article...

"The United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute have also conducted research[11] on the victims of crime which shows the picture of South African crime as more typical of a developing country. These statistics show that South Africa has lower rates of violent crime than many African and South American countries.
From 2003 - 2009, however, the murder and crime rate has stabilized according to official police data.[12]"

The difference being my story is true. They had to keep a gun around and, quoting directly from his mother, "that is no way to bring up children".

And isn't SA the country where they are so afraid of car-jackings that they came out with an anti car-jacking device that shoots flames out of the side of the car? It was ages ago, and I don't recall where I saw it but it was definitely SA.

Edit: This looks like what I was talking about: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yb-_JiYMNlA

so what im sure there are people in every country that own guns just because they are afraid of crime... never mind the fact the go bang and are pretty awesome, but there are paranoid people the world over, people who dont use cellphones so they dont get brain tumors etc etc etc...

all im saying is that SA Really is not as bad as alot of people think it is!

Oh dear! Poor old New Zealand made SECOND on that list [surrender]

Mind, with the pathetic Judges handing out paltry sentences even for "the worst case I've ever come across", Police concentrating on the real criminals - those who go 11km/hr over the speed limit and Politicions who are more interested in scoring points of each other than actually looking after the people that elected them, then perhaps it isn't so surprising!
Unfortunately, the crime that is done by the darker hued part of the population is hugely out of proportion to the actual number of them - but anything said about that is deemed racist.
Racism is to be deplored - but ignoring the facts isn't anything to be proud of!

I know this is going off topic but having lived in South Africa a while back for 7 years I want to give my very brief opinion.

South Africa is a great place to live if you meet two requirments.

1) You have a good income or an otherwise a fair amount of cash.
2) You are white.

Now you might say it is the same anywhere but the difference between the two in South Africa is unimaginable to most people.

Things may very well have changed though, I'm going back a good 10-15 years here.
