Now that would be hell. 23 years of being unable to do anything but lay in a bed.

Damn.

I suspect the one of the first things I might probably communicate after all of that was my desire to be.... "released"

How did he keep his sanity? Must of had an invisible or imaginary friend.

But honestly (without reading the article), how do they misdiagnose someone, how can someone be conscious for 23 years without anyone knowing? Did the guy bother to show any signs? or is he paralised?

I read this article this morning. I couldn't even imagine that living hell. Are far as insanity, when he was hooked up to a few devices to communicate, they said that he was very "angry" in his responses. I know I would be as well. [no]

are you sure? of course he was paralised? i realise this may be the chavs dream but to any normal person any way of communicating their conciousness would be their escape!!

No, he couldn't be bothered to show any signs; he thought it would be funny to make people think he was a vegetable for 23 years.

it's called "Locked in syndrome"

Some can still move their eyes or some muscles around their eyes, but some are 100% paralyzed.
You're basically trapped in your own body

Ahh consiousness. 23 years of Hell on Earth. Simply unreal. Hopefully all vegetables around the world are carefully examined now to see if they are totally aware of their surroundings or not.[shocked]

The only way to really tell is scan the brain for activity.

There was an interesting program on the BBC using these scans. One variation is to stimulate the brain with a small shock (through the skull) and then look at the resulting pattern.

When you are awake the stimulus spreads throughout the brain, when you are asleep it remains localised at the area is was applied suggesting consciousness involves the interconection of the different areas of the brain.

This is why I believe we should euthanize people in these types of conditions as it would be much better than leaving them in their current existence. This is beyond belief [help]

Greatest practical joke EVER

In all seriousness though, there are bound to be a lot more cases like him. Maybe we should reconsider what we do with our veggies.

WTF? He can speak with his family (through a computer) and use the internet, a lot better than death now.

They thought he was in a coma, so what would be the point.

Anyway i think after a while you'd cope with how things were. The torture and trauma must have been pretty horrific but i think your mental state would adjust to cope.

This story is a sham. He may have locked-in syndrome, but it is highly questionable whether he can actually communicate to anyone. If you look at this video, you'll see they're using a facilitator to move his hands across the keyboard--a practice that has been shown to transmit the unconscious thoughts of the person guiding the hand.

I'd like to see him answer a question which his facilitator can't actually hear.
