Yes that's my point, a pro will be good with any club. But give a hacker my Titleist blades and they they lose control very easily.
And no I'm not a salesmen, just a golfer who has played for 25+ years and seen what the technology has done to hackers. Give Tiger Woods a set of clubs from 40 years ago and he would still play within 1-2 shots of his usual round (the driver would be the only thing he really looses out on, but he would still hit it 300+ yards regardless) But give Joe Bloggs that same set and they would gain 5-10 shots a round. Golf balls are what have aided the pro's more than Joe Bloggs, the new balls have added 20 yards and impoved control to the pro's. All this is almost wasted on Joe Bloggs who is fighting hook or a slice and does not want the ball to spin more. |

I picked it up seriously this summer. I had gone to the range and played a course before, but I really wanted to get better. I picked up a set of clubs and have been at the range a lot. Only got out to play once, but should get lots more time in next summer.
The problem I have now is that most all my experience is at the range, so my short game is awful. I can get close in one or two strokes, then its a crapfest while I try to hit the ball 25 yards. ![]() |

Big fan of the game myself, but have been busy lately and am afraid my game has suffered. |

I've played twice in my life. I really enjoy it, it's a lot of fun. It just costs too much money for me to make it a regular thing. |

I used to play (wanted to be a pro) got down to 2, just got bored of it never played again, ive seen the longdrive thing on tv have no idea of how to get into it sorry I actually really enjoy the driving aspect more than anything, my short game is good as well, but simply hitting the snot out of the ball is where I get my kick's, it's so much more satisfying playing a full swing wood or long iron to the green than a good chip or putt. |

Yeah I was playing against my cousin for a bit. I don't have fancy clubs, but I bought a $500 set with cart and bag. When you're an amature, the type of clubs don't improve your game by much. I got myself some golf shoes this year, but I've only worn them once.
I wouldn't mind playing more games. The problem is when I don't play golf all the time I have to spend more money down the range getting my shot back in order before I can play another game. My shots go very bad, and need about 2-3 sessions at a range to iron out things out. |

I used to play 1-2 times a week but lately I haven't had any time to play. Once things at work slow down a bit I will go back to playing. Probably go down to Carmel and play not this weekend but the next. I did go to the range the other week and since I have been lifting I can manage to drive the ball 280-310 yards with good control.

Actually it's exactly the people it helps. The cavity back irons greatly improve the size of the sweet spots in the clubs. Same with the new drivers, the shorter inconsistant hitter benefits more from the newer tech than the longer hitter who hits it in the middle all the time. Meh, if you suck at hitting a golf ball, then you suck at hitting it. :P Even the cheapest of clubs now days have large sweet spots, big drive heads and cavity backs. The advantage from more expensive clubs diminishes all the time. These technology's pretty much benefit the amateur and so they are already built into cheap amateur clubs. But you're kind of right in saying that this technology largely benefits the amateur than the pro. The pros typically don't use cavity irons or carbon driver club shafts. Blade irons have a better centre of gravity, more weight, and have to be hit more accurate. It allows the pro player to tailor their shot more. The drivers they use are steel rods. So they are heavier, longer, and the drive shaft is so stiff that the power goes straight to the ball. That's why they can hit 300+ yards. Give an amateur a steel shaft driver and the ball will go everywhere but its intended direction. |
