Yes that's my point, a pro will be good with any club. But give a hacker my Titleist blades and they they lose control very easily.

And no I'm not a salesmen, just a golfer who has played for 25+ years and seen what the technology has done to hackers.

Give Tiger Woods a set of clubs from 40 years ago and he would still play within 1-2 shots of his usual round (the driver would be the only thing he really looses out on, but he would still hit it 300+ yards regardless)

But give Joe Bloggs that same set and they would gain 5-10 shots a round.

Golf balls are what have aided the pro's more than Joe Bloggs, the new balls have added 20 yards and impoved control to the pro's. All this is almost wasted on Joe Bloggs who is fighting hook or a slice and does not want the ball to spin more.

I've been playing for about 6 years. Up until this year I only played maybe 5-10 rounds a year but now I put in around 40-50.

I generally bogey every hole.

Default Who here plays golf?
I've played practically golf my entire life (seriously, I had a custom sized 7 iron when I was 4).

Now I'm not a pro golfer and never will be, but recently I've began wondering about long drive comps for fun.

Anyone involved in that here?

I picked it up seriously this summer. I had gone to the range and played a course before, but I really wanted to get better. I picked up a set of clubs and have been at the range a lot. Only got out to play once, but should get lots more time in next summer.

The problem I have now is that most all my experience is at the range, so my short game is awful. I can get close in one or two strokes, then its a crapfest while I try to hit the ball 25 yards.

doesn't your range have a pitching/putting green area?

Big fan of the game myself, but have been busy lately and am afraid my game has suffered.

I've played twice in my life. I really enjoy it, it's a lot of fun. It just costs too much money for me to make it a regular thing.

nice places are expensive, but most local community courses will have an after 3 special or somesuch... if you hoof it instead of using a cart, it can really be pretty reasonable. Is there a college in your area? If u are in college, or near one, find out where the college players play... as those places are more reasonable, and if u are still in school you can oftend get a student rate.

There's a golf course about 100-200m from my house. I don't play golf but I do like smacking gold balls over the trees and onto the golf course from time to time from a small open grass area outside of the golf course

Yeah that's my problem as well, the game seems to get more boring for me when I'm back down shooting low single digit's and I lose interest.

I actually really enjoy the driving aspect more than anything, my short game is good as well, but simply hitting the snot out of the ball is where I get my kick's, it's so much more satisfying playing a full swing wood or long iron to the green than a good chip or putt.

Yep, I love doing this too, only 90% of the balls I wack I don't get back[rofl]. To lazy to go to the golf course or search through the bushes to retrieve them. My gf's younger brothers and my younger cousin normally collect lost golf balls anyways, they got hundreds of them

Yeah I was playing against my cousin for a bit. I don't have fancy clubs, but I bought a $500 set with cart and bag. When you're an amature, the type of clubs don't improve your game by much. I got myself some golf shoes this year, but I've only worn them once.

I wouldn't mind playing more games. The problem is when I don't play golf all the time I have to spend more money down the range getting my shot back in order before I can play another game. My shots go very bad, and need about 2-3 sessions at a range to iron out things out.

Actually it's exactly the people it helps. The cavity back irons greatly improve the size of the sweet spots in the clubs. Same with the new drivers, the shorter inconsistant hitter benefits more from the newer tech than the longer hitter who hits it in the middle all the time.

Unfortunately, no. It's that nasty green turf to hit off of as well. Fine for drivers, but terrible to hit irons off of. No give to it at all. I take my pitching wedge out into my back yard and chip practice balls around now.[thumbup]

I play once or twice a month.

The beauty of being in the construction industry is that you get to play in plenty of tournaments. I'm not a great player by any means though. Usually hit in the low to mid 80's.

I have a full set of Taylormade r7 Draws.

I used to play 1-2 times a week but lately I haven't had any time to play. Once things at work slow down a bit I will go back to playing. Probably go down to Carmel and play not this weekend but the next. I did go to the range the other week and since I have been lifting I can manage to drive the ball 280-310 yards with good control.

I play almost every weekend. For the amount that I play I'm bloody terrible though. Every Sunday I come back from the course completely defeated yet first thing Monday morning all I can think about is my next round. It's like crack... just more expensive.

You some kind of sales rep? [rofl]

Meh, if you suck at hitting a golf ball, then you suck at hitting it. :P

Even the cheapest of clubs now days have large sweet spots, big drive heads and cavity backs. The advantage from more expensive clubs diminishes all the time. These technology's pretty much benefit the amateur and so they are already built into cheap amateur clubs. But you're kind of right in saying that this technology largely benefits the amateur than the pro.

The pros typically don't use cavity irons or carbon driver club shafts. Blade irons have a better centre of gravity, more weight, and have to be hit more accurate. It allows the pro player to tailor their shot more.
The drivers they use are steel rods. So they are heavier, longer, and the drive shaft is so stiff that the power goes straight to the ball. That's why they can hit 300+ yards. Give an amateur a steel shaft driver and the ball will go everywhere but its intended direction.
