I watched the whole program and it appears the guy is some lifelong parrot chaser and was fulfilling a lifetime ambition to be scarred by one of these birds.

Absolutely! These guys live for moments like these that somehow fulfill their dreams. They may be hurt but it's a one of a kind experience that most people don't get to experience.
