Default Is Internet in New Zealand slow and expensive?
I heard that Internet is expensive is slow and expensive in New Zealand (compared with other developed nations around the world). Is this true?

If it's true, is it because their Internet signals come and go through satellite rather than undersea cables?

What?

First of all, NZ internet speeds are on par with Australia's, I'm pretty damned sure they have ADSL2+ over there. Second of all their prices are also on par with Australia's and probably even cheaper. And what do you mean they use satellites? Australia's undersea cables I'm pretty sure have to connect to NZ before connecting to the US. And because they have a smaller population they probably have more bandwidth then us Australians.

I think the internet here is great but I believe it's better in NZ.

It's relatively expensive - the lower population and housing density together with a relatively large land area means the per capita cost of hardware is high.
Then there is the stupid governments we've had that have made a lot of noise about improving the broadband service in the country but the dominant telecom service, TELECOM, has been playing all sorts of delaying and plainly deceptive tricks to make things hard for other companies to provide a service, let alone compete.
Largely as a result, they've been delaying upgrading from ADSL to ADSL2+ except in a few areas of the larger towns - in fact, there are areas where they're restricted to either dialup or privately funded satalite services.
As a result of the TELECOM intransigence, there are now several companies offering wireless 'broadband', but it's still relatively slow.

As a comparison, I'm paying a total of around NZ$100 (US$65) per month* for "unlimited" up and down with a 10G limit (10G is around NZ$11 (US$7.20) pm for each additional pack - I don't d/load much so haven't gone over yet) and that is actually around 2.8Mb/s down and 780kb/s up. Some friends closer to the exchanges are getting close to the rated 8Mb/s down.

*Includes line rental, land line, maintanance and $10 credit towards toll calls - which I've never gone over.

I think this link should see you right with what you're enquiring about.

[edit] The Government is always talking about first class, world leading, etc, but to be honest, in many ways it also resembles a Third World "Banana Republic" - I guess that's due to decades of monkeys leading the country!

I think he means less demand on the cables/satalites, hence more available bandwidth.

Yup, TELECOM = self abusers who also screw everyone else in a less pleasant manner*.
If it wasn't for their lying, stalling and effectively blackmailing actions over the last decade or so, we'd have a much better and cheaper network with more options who we dealt with.

*Pretty much the same way I view Micro$oft.

On a slightly different note, aluminium foil is relatively cheap there so you can make plenty of hats.

I take it TELECOM is like Telstra in Australia?
As you may know, Telstra in Australia used to be called TELECOM. You can still find some old TELECOM hardware kicking around.

Just a bit of trivia.

Just got renamed in 1993 for the hell of it. Wiki article offers no more in-depth explanation, but has an example of the old logo.

Holly cr@p I remember that logo. I was like 4-5yo when I last saw it.

Also is the Telstra building in that link the tallest one, if so I wonder if that's the one Little_Lenny works in, I think I heard him say something about working in the tallest office building in Australia. Now I know where my next target is.

No that's not it. I don't work for Telstra. But I do live close to that Telstra building, my apartment complex is directly behind the building, if you could see through the Telstra building you'd see where I live. It's also funny that my telephone exchange is taller than my 20 story apartment! Good internet! [rofl]

I work in here... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rialto_Towers

Good ad that one, I liked it back then, and like it now.

I actually didn't mind Telecom at that time, it was only later on as they became privatised that they really started ripping people off.

Basically once Telstra was privatised, it all became about the shareholders and profits, and taking advantage of the monopoly position. You can tell by the Telecom/Telstra ads of old, it was all about building new technology, but now Telstra could not care less about trying to deliver Australians the latest technologies. It's the small companies like Internode and iinet that are driving innovation with high speed internet with VoIP, 100mbit fibre to new homes (internode offer 100/5 Mbit) or wimax to rural areas, but there is only so much they can do. The big players that can rapidly change things just sit on their butts and sit on the profits as long as they can.

From what I understand Telstra only owns the copper lines which provide the phone line and ADSL capabilities. ADSL2+ 9although also runs on copper lines) is apparently different and is not monopolized by Telstra hence the much cheaper prices then standard ADSL connections. I unfortunetely have to pay internode to rent ADSL2+ services from Telstra so I'm essentially paying double the normal price[thumbdown].

Also I just found this. Internode are started to roll out FTTH right now and it's prices are awesome. I can get a 50Mb connection with more download quota for the price I'm paying now. To bad it's limited to Queensland only but who cares, in a few years I'll be using it[thumbup]. maybe a 100Mb connection instead.
