I'm voting for your sis but...

I can't really understand why weddings are done sooooooooooooooooo over the top in US.

We had AMAZING wedding. We had band (with best male vocalist I've heard live.), food, big multilayered cake, "wedding-drink" etc. And it cost about 2000-3000€'s (including our clothes.)

"Normal" wedding in US costs at least 10.000$. At least that's what I've read. [surrender]

I had my wedding at a courthouse, and then did the reception at a small union hall we rented. I hate big celebrations and crap. And srsly, who wants to pay a ton of money to celebrate the end of their life?

Most weddings don't touch $10,000. A "normal" middle class wedding is about half that amount. Sure some people go nuts, but that's not the norm. My wedding was between $5000 and $6000 two years ago. We had roughly 90 people there, live band, reception, church. It really gets expensive when the wedding has a completely open bar. I've seen some weddings rack up a $3000+ bar tab alone.

You would have had a heart attack if you were at the wedding I went to last month. They spent WELL over $100,000 on that one night. Completely over the top. They had the best fireworks display I've ever seen...and it was for their wedding. Open bar, live band, a string quartet for the wedding ceremony and before the reception, a cocktail hour with enough food to feed a third world country, ice sculptures, about 25 minutes worth of fireworks for the cutting of the cake, a fountain of chocolate with the desserts, food that looked like Gordon Ramsay cooked...yea...he's loaded, but still unbelievable. [shocked]

You haven't lived in the NYC area, then. I've been to quite a few weddings that soared above $30,000, and my cousin's wedding from last month...see the reply above. [surrender]
Nothing more than a contest to see who can outdo the other IMO.
