You need some analog video input!
Best way would be to buy some USB or PCI card for this!
I bought one of these: http://www.drivecity.de/product_info...nitstelle.html

They are rather cheap now, I got it for 45€, but these were like 99€ back then...then you take a free tool for video recording/editing (there's a rather good free tool called "VirtualDub"), and you can start recording...

So this card has a video in and can connected to a camcorder? Seems more like a TV card? We have a TV card already (DVB-S) but it doesnt have any video in connectors.

I got one of these, took a bit of messing around but worked brilliantly, very cheap too [thumbup]

Yeah, looks actually pretty good. But people say you cant get the sound to the PC? And it wouldnt work with Vista?

do you have a dvd recorder or freeview box with a hard drive?
Unfortunately no.

If you have a Video-in option on the GPU you should be able to record the signal coming from a VCR.
Its a 8600GTS, it only as video out connectors (DVI, VGA, Video out).

You need a card with an analog input - whatever that is...the most "common" way are those analog TV cards, but some of the "video"cards which are designed for such things have an s-video in, which gives better picture quality...

Sound worked fine for me, took me a bit to work out how, can't remember exactly now lol, it's been a while, anyway if I worked it out it won't be rocket science.

Just used on XP here.

Default How to digitalize your VHS videos?
My dad has loads of old holiday tapes, or from birthdays, weddings and whatnot.

The tapes seem to get old though, as the video quality gets worse and worse. Now he wants to copy them onto HDD or DVD. He doesnt have an "all in one" player or DVD recorders and such. Just a (relatively new) computer with the regular in/out connectors.

So, Is there a way to connect a camcorder or an old video player to the computer somehow, and copy the videos to HDD? If possible without buying expensive hardware/software. Wie already tried to connect the camcorder via Firewire to the PC, but somehow the Windows Movie Maker doesnt recognize it. It says "no compatible video signal blabla..."

I really have never done any research on this and have no idea. So please excuse the (possible) stupid question.

Thanks for any help!

Edit: The computer has Vista Ultimate 32bit installed.
