When I was last in the US I saw a guy in a truck with the same kind of setup go past on I75. [surrender]

Insane!

Nice picture of the sky btw [thumbup]

That's hilarious. So I75, you must have been in Florida right? [yes]

It would be cool to see better "Voice to Text" options using a bluetooth headset to cut back on the risk of SMS while driving. The Iphone 3GS has some pretty cool voice recognition software in it, but it has a long way to go to enable a totally hands free experience.
a handsfree set does not solve the problem with distraction

I think it can certainly help. That's like saying using a Bluetooth headset while talking doesn't help with distraction. The majority of accidents happen when fumbling with a phone and not keeping one's eyes on the road.

It amazes me how much resistance there is for something that can have a real impact on road safety.

If it's not a phone, it's going to be the radio, changing CD's, fiddling with an iPod, messing with hair and makeup, or just plain terrible driving. I know for a fact that for me personally, using a BT headset allows me to focus on the road much more than holding a phone up to my hear.

And how did you measure that you actually were more focused?

Radio/CD/iPod controls on the steering wheel shouldn't be an option nowadays, they should be manadatory. Then those actions only take a second.

Doing your hair and makup goes in the same category as making a phone call, you simply don't do that when you are driving a 1 tonn vehicle.

Nah, hands free is not that good.

I think the best idea is to use a full keyboard. You can type whatever you want faster unlike those bloody phone keypads, and you don't have to take your eye's of the road! If you can't touch type then you should be made to take a driving test until you can, as you will be a very dangerous driver until you do.

I'm posting this on my notebook as I drive home, wireless [thumbup]

Keyboard and mouse FTW!

I did a double blind study with a control group while I was on the road. How the hell else do you think I measured it

Me not fumbling with my phone and taking my eyes off the road = safer than fumbling with my phone and taking my eyes off the road.
