Default Backup Stratgey = Fail
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/8049780.stm

On it, he explained the site's backing-up process, although he did not explain why the firm had no external media storage.

"Some have asked whether or not we had back-ups. Yes, we dutifully backed up our servers every day. Unfortunately, we backed up the servers between our two servers.

"The hacker took out both servers, destroying our ability to use one or the other back-up to remedy the situation." So, 13 years of work is wasted because server 1 was backing up to server 2, and server 2 was backing up to server 1.

Ouch.

What I dont understand is, why would anyone want to destroy such a website. I mean it offered great things (for that certain community) and there was nothing to gain by hacking it. No money, no fame no nothing.

I hate these things more than crimes that "make sense", like where someone wants to steal something. This is just destroying without a purpose. Pisses me off.

Because some people like to destroy things just for the sake of it. Witness the mindless vandalism of property you can see in many places.

I'm no network admin or whatever, but wouldn't you NOT want your backup server connected to the internet?

Sucks for these guys though. I guess their plan seemed like a good idea at the time. Hard to really predict these kind of things.

What they did was stupid. But I don't think they expected someone to break into their servers and destroy all their data for absolutely no reason. They probably saw no reason to take enterprise level backup precautions.

True. Honestly, if I was in their situation, I doubt I would have too. There was really nothing to gain by hacking the site, so it would have been a waste of money/resources. In hindsight, maybe not, but you know what they say about hindsight...

a backup solution for them could have cost less than 200 bucks.

That is unfortunate though, but it is the world we live.

You always have to assume the worst is going to happen in IT.
