Default buying a LAWN MOWER
It's that time of year again... yard mowing time. I have two crappy lawn mowers now, but as with computer parts, it's time to upgrade. One of my lawn mowers doesn't run very well. It's very weak. The other lawn mower runs ok, but the handle is very low and after mowing it kills my back. I have to bend over to push it. I'm not a giant, but I am 6'4" and a higher handle is necessary.

Anyways, I'm thinking about this one. John Deere JS25. It's green, it's powerful and it's a John Deere. They're supposed to be good, I'm pretty sure. My yard is big with a lot of trees, but to small for a riding mower with so many yard obstacles.

Anyone buy a lawn mower recently? I'll probably buy this weekend, but this is what i'm leaning towards now. And since my refrigerator I bought last year is now paid off with 0 interest, I'm thinking about getting the mower for 12 months no interest. Easy way to spend $30.00 a month maybe.

I also thought about getting a Toro... they're supposed to be good... except they're red and my neighbors mower is red. Maybe a Lawnboy? They're green and made by Toro. Any suggestions?

should be fine for what your using it for... just bear in mind you pay more for a John Deere as opposed to a similar spec mower from another brand.

In all honesty I prefer cylinder mowers for the absolute best cut you can get on a lawn... rotory mowers seem to "tear" the grass as opposed to trim it correctly.

The only problem with cylider mowers however is the fact that once grass gets too long they can not cut them properly and require several passes to finish the job.

But once the grass is short enough... you cant beat a cylinder mower finish.

I don't know the conversion rate, but that thing looks more expensive than the one I posted! When my mom lived in Columbia back in the... oh 50's or 60's or something, she said they (the lawn people) cut the grass with a machete and that was the best way for the nicest yard.

That is sorta what I was going to say.
To the OP, while you're at it, pick up a cheap disc grinder, goggles and ear protection. If you keep the blades SHARP, giving them a quick lick over every 4 to 6 weeks, you will get a really nice, smooth cut and the grass will grow a lot better, thicker and healthier. I mow weekly and don't use a catcher (unless I mis a week) and the grass cuttings act as a fertiliser - all good. You also get a very nice cut at idle speeds.
However, while flatting as a student, we used an old hand reel mower that did a great job after I gave it a good going over.

At the moment we use a 2 stroke as it was a freebee from some relatives but I generally prefer a 4 stroke as they're generally a lot quieter.

Engine Brand: Briggs & Stratton, sounds like a good one to me. I have never had any engine problems with my yard equipment that is powered by their engine.

If your yard is big enough to warrant it, I would totally recommend you invest in a Lawn Tractor. I've been using one for the past two summers and I will never ever go back to a push lawn mower. It's a quicker, more professional looking job. Plus your not killing yourself pushing a lawn mower in 30-40C / 90-100F degree weather.

The one with the semi-naked guy on the rideon? That would be Foggy, IIRC.

A riding mower would be nice, but I can't justify it at this time. Compared to my current push mower, a new one will be almost as good as a riding one. I still need to go check out the Lawnboy mowers. They're supposed to be good and theyr'e green too.

Nice one - no excuse, though, as I know quite a few girls who mow lawns.

Welcome, BTW, don't let the youngsters scare you off and, if you have any problems with PMs or whatever, give the MOD's a PM - they love disciplining the kids.

And if you were my g/f, I'd tell you tough ****, mow the damned yard yourself.

Women. . .think they can get away with anything just because they're girls. [rolleyes]

Actually I don't let my wife near the lawn mower. . .I know somehow, she'll end up losing either fingers or toes.

Most guys do.

My wife offered to mow the lawn if I buy a riding mower. I'll probably be a cheapskate, get a push mower, and do it myself.
