Uh oh. My most trusted critic has panned it! [shocked]

http://www.newyorker.com/arts/critic...ci_cinema_lane

Now, I enjoyed the Watchmen novel more than Lane, but I have no faith in Snyder, and I fear even in the hands of a capable director translating it into a film that lives up to the novel's éclat for deconstructing popular culture is virtually an impossible undertaking.
He didn't enjoy Taken and Valkyrie, two recent movies I thoroughly enjoyed. Also, stating that "nobody over the age of 25 will enjoy the savagery on screen" makes me think that he didn't understand the movie 300, of which was completely bad ass. I'll wait until I see the movie to reserve judgment.

Blue Smurf man has his old man out all the time?

I don't know the comic book or anything about them but I read that the movie has porn and a "blue smurf penis"[rofl]

Sounds weird for a superhero film?

True from the comic book. Dr. Manhattan felt neither hot nor cold, and as time went on he had less and less interest in human trappings, so yeah no clothes became a typical thing for him.

Sounds like he completely misunderstood the Watchmen? "nobody over twenty-five could take any joy from the savagery that is fleshed out onscreen" is just absolute crap.

Saw it last night and enjoyed the film, not everyones cup of tea though thats for certain. Rorschach, doc m and comedian were the best characters imo.

***Sort of spoiler***

The chick who plays laurie was absolutely terrible, almost spoilt the whole movie. The movie was very close to the comic book, however the ending was changed and therefore some of the other parts of the movie as well. Wasn't a bad change though, i thought they did it quite well and it all made sense. Some key points of the comic were left out which i thought was a shame for the character development.

Well I was wondering and it happened with unexpected results. Ebert gives watchmen 4 outta 4.

I am quite surprised. Should be noted I'm sure he's never even seen the comic.

and he watched it a 2nd time:

Just finished the novel about 30 minutes ago (just in time!). Very excited to see this.

14hrs 30mins.....

At the moment I don't know what to expect. On the one hand this is Watchmen, my favourite book of all time, and the thought of seeing those characters on the big screen does make me all smiley. To his credit Snyder seemingly has used the comic as a storyboard as some scenes are almost mirror images of the comic.

On the other hand, for a long time I was firmly in the camp that said it was un-filmable and any adaptation could never hope to match the book. Given some reviews it seems that Moore was right, and Watchmen really was a showcase for all the things comics could do and films never could (at least, not without losing your average audience member after the 4th flashback).

Then of course there is the fact that I am going into the movie knowing that there is about 60 minutes worth of footage waiting to be put back into the film, so I'm not getting the 'proper' Watchmen film experience.... which is kind of a shitter really.

If nothing else, it'll be an interesting experience.

I agree, and I'm more or less inclined to use the film as an extension of the universe rather than the final word. Unfortunately, I'm seeing the movie with 6 people who never read the novel, so it'll be interesting to see their reaction to it, especially since it''ll be nothing like any other "superhero" movie they've seen. However, there are two things that his movie definitely will have going for it: Insane violence, and Snyder's impeccable visual acuity and style. Be sure to come back here and post your reviews!

This sounds silly, but I'm hesitant to read the graphic novel until after I see the movie, because I don't want it to spoil the plot

Is that stupid logic, or should I just read the damn thing now?

I'd read it. If anything the movie would spoil the comic
But it's much less about the "surprise" of what happens as much as the story itself. And undoubtedly the movie isn't going to nail it the same way the novel does.

Very excited! In the process of reading the novel at the moment.

I think they've done a good job with the casting and Dr. Manhattan is going to look badass

I'd read it. (But being a fan of the comic, I guess I would say that!)

My enjoyment of Watchmen doesn't come from the plot that drives the story, but more from the characters, their background stories, and the impact that they all had on the world. And given that those characters stories are told through numerous flashbacks, I'm not sure how much of it they can keep in. By the time that the Super Extended Director's cut is released they will have added 65 minutes worth of footage to the film, which should give you an idea of how much is being cut out of the cinematic release.

If you have easy access to a copy then go for it, but given how close we are to the release, I wouldn't go out your way for it.

Wow. Fantastic film. I felt it stayed very true to the novel while at the same time making an excellent movie.

Yea! I literally cannot wait until tomorrow (tonight actually) to see it. The novel was an unbelievable masterpiece, and if it weren't for Dibrom and Siony, I wouldn't have read it. [yes]
