Default Images from Watchmen movie (promo/viral stuff etc 56k go away)
Click for the bigger version (if there is one)

Just over 5 weeks or so until release, anyway else feeling the hype? Some of the images fill me with some confidence, but then other stuff I've heard makes me cry (changed ending for example).

edit: Oh snap, I forgot this; http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=nd5cInmK6LQ

Why is there a pic of Bowie and Jagger? Forgive me if this is a stupid question, I never read the graphic novel.

The comic follows events from the 40s through to the 80s, no doubt those characters are being used to help set the timeframe for the movie (lot of flashbacks through the comic that jump from one era to another).

There is one passage in the comic where one character goes on about the 'hippies of the sixties' spreading peace, love and other such un-American values. Perhaps those characters tie into that feeling.

Ah, makes sense. I've heard good things about this. My gf read the graphic novel so maybe I will check it out before the film comes out. Cheers.

I'd read it. (But being a fan of the comic, I guess I would say that!)

My enjoyment of Watchmen doesn't come from the plot that drives the story, but more from the characters, their background stories, and the impact that they all had on the world. And given that those characters stories are told through numerous flashbacks, I'm not sure how much of it they can keep in. By the time that the Super Extended Director's cut is released they will have added 65 minutes worth of footage to the film, which should give you an idea of how much is being cut out of the cinematic release.

If you have easy access to a copy then go for it, but given how close we are to the release, I wouldn't go out your way for it.

Tales of the Black Freighter;

Well I bought the book, and I'm about half way through it. It's been a while since I've read any comics or graphic novels, but I can see why this book is so celebrated. It's fantastic so far! [shocked]

Ahhh the joys of living in the UK, where the closest IMAX cinema is like 150 miles away.

QFT, regular tickets are $11, IMAX is like $20-ish.

I never even heard of Watchmen until some promotional stuff for it popped up on the XBL marketplace before xmas. I thought it was a spoof superhero TV series they were advertising.

Still, it looks like i'm going to end up seeing it soon with some friends who are going, but i can't say i've been blown away by the trailers so far. It all looks a little..........tacky?

It's based on Time Magazine's 100 best novels of all time, so rest assured the subject material is top notch. I too thought the same thing until I read the graphic novel, and I must say I haven't looked forward to a movie this much in a long, long time.

It's actually on Time's list of "the 100 best English-language novels from 1923 to the present", but in any case that's still a remarkable feat. To even consider a graphic novel as one of the best English novels of the 20th century is unbelievable.

Uh oh. My most trusted critic has panned it! [shocked]

“Watchmen,” like “V for Vendetta,” harbors ambitions of political satire, and, to be fair, it should meet the needs of any leering nineteen-year-old who believes that America is ruled by the military-industrial complex, and whose deepest fear—deeper even than that of meeting a woman who requests intelligent conversation—is that the Warren Commission may have been right all along. The problem is that Snyder, following Moore, is so insanely aroused by the look of vengeance, and by the stylized application of physical power, that the film ends up twice as fascistic as the forces it wishes to lampoon. The result is perfectly calibrated for its target group: nobody over twenty-five could take any joy from the savagery that is fleshed out onscreen, just as nobody under eighteen should be allowed to witness it. http://www.newyorker.com/arts/critic...ci_cinema_lane

Now, I enjoyed the Watchmen novel more than Lane, but I have no faith in Snyder, and I fear even in the hands of a capable director translating it into a film that lives up to the novel's éclat for deconstructing popular culture is virtually an impossible undertaking.
