I've never quite understood the girls car / hairdressers car labelling. It doesn't really seem to have any consistent logic at all.
Maybe all red convertibles are considered hairdressers cars? [surrender]

Which was my point, the last time an American car won outright was in the 60's, with the legendary Ford GT-40. I made this point twice now [rolleyes]
Well it depends in which category you race . P1 is not a real car, at least not based on road models .

And slapping a Vette shell on a race car does not make it a real road going Vette.

Since when could a hairdresser afford any of these cars? And if they can, darnit i knew i picked the wrong field of study. And no the viper is not a womans car... ewww dodge.

So what was the census? I mean to the original topic. A super car is exclusive, more than likely not a mass production line model, fast, lots of control?

According to most people here, it has to be insanely expensive, crap to get into, have crap visibility, have them only make a handfull at the factory, and have many other downsides, oh, and proform well.

nice.

Extremely high performance+exotic/rare = supercar.

No need to whine about it. No need for additional downsides, although by default this means they will be expensive to buy and expensive to own.

I thought they were based on the road car but with modifications.

Imagine a $50k supercharged Ariel Atom destroying a $500,000 super car ;P.

Default What makes a super car?
Really, what's the defining characteristic of one? I've seen plenty of Corvettes or Vipers that would stomp a shitbox in Porches and Ferraris, but I almost never hear them called super cars? What's the defining line?

Is it handling? If a Civic out handles a Ferrari is it a super car?
Is it price? If you get your Pinto gold plated is it a super car?
Is it exclusivity? My 1914 Model T is more exclusive than any 360 Spider does that make it a super car?
Is it the number of vents? (That's a Saleen joke there...)

What makes a car a super car?

Its a combination of performance / handling, price, and exclusivity.

A supercar has traditionally been an powerful, expensive, exotic car, produced in limited numbers, and usually rather expensive.

It is also (to certain degree) down to the make.

The lastest offering from Noble for example, fills all of the criteria in terms of handling, speed, performance etc, yet I doubt most people have ever heard of them, and for that reason it will never really be a true "supercar".

So if a Z06 cost 3x the price, it would be a super car?

only if they produced 8x less of them . doesn't make them any less good, as a z06 will stomp most cars out there a new one, but that doesn't matter. the fact that you can ATTAIN one, makes it not a supercar. "Super" cars, are "only" for the rich and famous. BAH i say. BOOOO stupid supercar rules, HORRAYYYYYYYYYY Corvettes!

No (and you know that too ).

Whether or not a car is a supercar is not the result of black-and-white box ticking. Its something more than that ultimately - A supercar is not the result of filling certain criteria - its a combination of several factors, some of which cannot really be quantified. - ultimately it is rather subjective.

Supercars = Ferrari, Lamborghini and Buggati usually, and maybe Maserati occasionally...

Exceptions to the rule = McLaren F1, Ford GT/40, AC/Shelby Cobra, etc..

Pagatti, Konegsenegnen, Saleen, and many others?

That's what I'm getting at, there's no real standard...

I'd say out of those three, only the Koenigsegg is a "Supercar", the others meet the same subjective criteria as the Nobel that Chris mentioned.
