Default How important is programming in the IT field?
I'm currently designing a degree plan that I hope will involved something with IT. I already have an two year degree that covers the basics of networking but I think that it would help to know some type of programming. I'm thinking of learning database programming but I'm not sure that's a direction that I should go. I don't plan on becoming a programmer though as it's not what I'm interested in. I'm not a big fan of programming to being with so I'm not even sure I should be thinking about it.

In my experience the only kind of "programming" you will need to know is VBS scripts and batch commands etc. Leave programming to the guys who know it, i say. Yes it would come in handy i'm sure....but it's really not needed......unless you are actually a programmer

If you don't want to be a programmer, and you don't like programming, studying programming doesn't seem like a good choice. It's not really something you can take a light approach to either. Programming's a very fast-moving profession, so unless it's your main focus, you'll fall behind. Of course falling behind is a risk in any part of IT, but I think more-so with programming.

There's a lot of infrastructure work out there that doesn't require programming knowledge. Basically, unless you want to be a programmer, you don't need to know how to do it.

I hate programming with a passion but it's quite heavy in my course (I got gipped at open day!) I don't mind it, I just hate the process of it having to code ages only to find that it doesn't bloody work after.

Programming itself is quite important but depends on the field. Programmers generally are quite highly sought after hence why they're generally paid more.
