Default Insane - electric car running 11.5 sec 1/4 mile runs
Must admit that was pretty cool and I'm not really interested in watching drag racing or any other sort of racing.

The "zombies" chassis almost looked like an early MK1 ford escort rally car.

There's a British company using a Mini with four hub motors with, IIRC, a total of 640hp!
That Datto is pretty cool, though![thumbup][thumbup][thumbup]

Makes the Tesla look bad, especially the recharge times.

uhh... a 12-20 minute recharge after a hard 1/4 mile. Sure, it makes the Tesla look bad, if you believe Top Gear.

But yes, I love enterprising individuals that do stuff like this, it's stuff I'd love to do if I had more money to burn.

EDIT: However, the whole "never put an ounce of pollution out" is highly misleading.

Perhaps not. The majority of power used in Oregon is hydro-electric based.

Interesting. Unfortunately, 50% of this country's power is still coal-based.

Dude, that was awesome! Thanks for sharing. I'm a big believer in the electric car, plus I love racing and speed, so suffice to say, I LOVE THIS CAR!

Even hydro electric stations pump water up at night while power is cheap (produced by power plants) so they can sell at a profit the next day

The electric car is most definitely the future. If it wasnt for corrupt governments, corrupt oil companies, and corrupt car manufacturers, we'd all be driving electric now. You could recharge them using solar panels on the roof, or even with a wind turbine.

Not really, the problems with electric cars are range and recharge times, there have been a few that could suit people who only travel a small distance in a day,but that doesnt really suit most people's driving habits.

The recharge times are horrible too I think the best I've heard has still been in teh range of several hours VS. just gassing your car up and going.

Hydrogen is my pick as we lose nothing and could retrofit pretty much any car to use it for a comparatively small price.

I'd rather have this electric car.
http://www.solarpowerwindenergy.org/...-in-10-minute/

10minute recharge time to full charge with 200mile/320km range.

And I think it would smoke that electric Datson on the drag strip.

please explain the retro-fit to use hydrogen in an internal combustion engine... you could make a lot of money

Thats the future right there.

How bad for the environment are the huge loads of batteries though?

One method they are working on is a converter that extracts hydrogen from the fuel itself. It is then pumped back into the fuel when the fuel is sprayed into the combustion chamber. Currently it is being done through a chemical reaction, but they are working on a non-chemical consuming method.

The hydrogen acts as both a natural octane booster, since the flash point of hydrogen is higher then that of gasoline/petro, and it also acts as an accelerant that when ignited, allows the combustion to burn through the combustion chamber faster igniting more fuel within the chamber. In theory, it is supposed to increase fuel efficiency at least 20% without loss of power.

Burning Hydrogen is just as internal combustrion very innefficent because a lot of the energy gets lost in the form of heat. +20% on the low efficency of IC is still not much and you do not eliminate the vibration or the cooling demands either. It's a waste of time and resources to invest in such a stopgap solution.

Batteries are fine for the environment if they get properly recycled.

As much as I would love to see another form of energy to propel our cars, electric is not the answer. It is only viable in certain climates where temperatues dont get below freezing. What's going to happen when its -9F outside like it was this past week and you only have an electric car to drive? Even if you used a battery warmer I still dont see it as a viable solution.
