Default Comcast Bandwidth Usage
So, Comcast has a 250gig limit. My friend has already once hit his limit.

I was wondering if Comcast allows us to view how much bandwidth that we use. I am afraid that I myself might end up going over this limit.

Could Comcast be taken to court if they didn't show us our usage? Seems like it would be our right to know.

Currently Comcast doesn't have a useage meter, but they're supposed to be working on one. For now you can install a meter on your computers, or if you have a router capable of running DD-WRT or Tomato firmware they have useage meters. I wouldn't worry about it too much though. If you go over 250GB AND you're one of the top 1000 bandwidth users on Comcasts network that month, they will send you a warning letter letting you know how much you used. If it happens again within 6 months your connection will be terminated.

be a good neighbor and help your neighbors set up and secure their wifi
...and talk them into letting you use it

on a related note I recently recived an email from comcast saying that they where also going to start throttling connections per local area so the "regular users" wouldnt notice slower service because someone is actually using their connection >.>

My friend hit his limit, and he was cut off. Thankfully that billing month was up the next day.

I hope that they gets these meters soon. I am sure that I already come very very close to the limit most months.

Your friend must have had other problems then, because when comcast cuts you off for excessive use, it isn't just for that month, it's for a year. Also they will not cut you off without giving you a warning first.

I am sure they are hoping that the other company's will follow their example. I would not be at all surprised to see an eventual investigation on charges of collusion if they do.

The threat of high usage customers leaving Comcast doesn't bother them. As these types of users are too expensive to run.

If they move to another ISP that's fine by them. That means another ISP has to deal with the problem. So other ISP's get an influx of high data users. Their costs bloat out.... guess what, they all start enforcing caps or higher fees.

Americans are new to this game. [rofl]

High data users did the whole ISP hopping thing to in Australia too, until in the end all ISP's just had to deal with these people and raise their product prices.

Since Comcast are now enforcing this cap, they should have to by law provide a usage meter, just like ISP's here.
