Practice is the important thing. I'd get one of those beginners guitar books and start learning a few easy open chords like A, D and E. Once you have them sounding good then C and G. F and B are a bit of a bitch to begin with.
If it's your kind of music listen to a load of Dandy Warhols tunes, a lot of them are dead basic and fun to play. I'm sure others could suggest similar bands. |

I never learned from a teacher either.
I think the trick for me is to learn songs that you really like, and really want to play. Then there will be lots of motivation to keep trying/practicing, and practice is the key. Begin by picking a simple song, then download the tabs for it and learn them one small section at a time, making sure you got the previous section down before moving on. Start off slow and steady, and don't try to do more than you are able to. This might not be the best way, but its how I started playing, and it worked for me. Oh and make sure you get the basics right like left and right hand position, and how to hold a pick. There are plenty of instructional material on the web. You don't want to get into any bad habbits right from the start! |

Play, play alot. Another thing that helped me when I was learning was jam/play along to the songs I wanted to play.

I started playing the keyboard a few years ag but didnt want to organise a teacher to teach me. i prefer learning thing myself, after getting really frustrated i considered buying one of those beginners guide to keyboards and it helped a little. I then came across the Pianos from dummies which was excellent;
Piano: http://www.dummies.com/WileyCDA/Dumm...bcat-ARTS.html http://musicbooksplus.com/piano-dummies-p-5328.html Here is a list of the Guitar ones: http://www.dummies.com/WileyCDA/Sect...0for%20dummies Rock Guitar For Dummies by Jon Chappell, Carl Verheyen, Paper, 2001, $24.99 Blues Guitar For Dummies by Jon Chappell, Paper, 2006, $24.99 Bass Guitar For Dummies by Patrick Pfeiffer, Will Lee, Paper, 2003, $24.99 Guitar For Dummies, 2nd Edition by Mark Phillips, Jon Chappell, Paper, 2005, $24.99 Music Theory For Dummies by Michael Pilhofer, Holly Day, Paper, 2007, $24.99 Electronics For Dummies by Gordon McComb, Earl Boysen, Paper, 2005, $21.99 Banjo For Dummies by Bill Evans, Paper, 2007, $24.99 You dont need a teacher to teach you how to play, i have a few friends who can play very well and thought themselves. A teacher may be recommended by some but if you teach yourself you can learn at your own pace |

never took any formal lessons myself
the best way to do it (well, for me atleast..or for other people i taught) would be to pick a song that you really like.. i mean really really like, even if it is hard. it'll motivate you, even if youre hands are hurting. secondly, make sure to keep on playing EVERYDAY for a fixed amount of time for practice.. even if youre just playing the same thing over and over for the first few times.. as long as youre getting some practice.. and most of all, enjoy what youre doing! |

i honestly believe that if you want to learn and maximize your talent at it, just pick up a guitar and start messing around. to me lessons arn't a BAD idea, but they can be costly and maybe teach you at a pace you're not ready for or just arn't interested in. Ii think you'll have a lot more fun at it if you teach yourself. [yes]

for me, it was really wanting to play certain songs. Pick some easy tracks and get hold of the guitar tabulature. Tabulature is really easy to read even for the someone who isn't a seasoned guitar player. Eventually you'll get better, play more complex songs, learn chords etc. It is something that takes time, years infact. Spend some nice money on a guitar that you like, and you'll be inclined to practice often. It needs willpower too.
I think a common mistake among many is to purchase a cheap or "bundled kit" type thing. Try to avoid that. Good luck |

IndianScout I just saw those amps in the latest guitar world, do you have any recordings or clips on youtube that we could hear ?
To the OP depending on what you want to play, I really like watching lessons by seasoned artists on youtube or google video, like "melodic control" by Marty Friedman, warm up routines / exercises (VERY important !). Also if you think you suck technically remember to play with emotion and everything will just flow. |

There is no such thing as learning guitar "fast" and "easy". If it were truly "fast" and "easy", everyone would do it. And "free" guitar instruction materials are generally worth what you paid for them.
Instead there are a lot of clueless beginners who buy guitars thinking that its going to be fast and easy to learn guitar off the internet -- then they find out that they're NOT going to be good enough to be in their friend's band in a month, get frustrated and quit. Or they learn a few intros and solos to a half dozen songs from tabs they got off the Internet, but they skip over the basics of MUSIC. They can't play chords or keep a steady beat when they're playing rhythm, can't improvise, follow a chord chart, or play anything they don't have tabs for. Then they hit a wall in their guitar playing and come on here looking for advice on how to improve -- and the advice is -- TAKE SOME LESSONS. LEARN THE BASICS before you dive into playing solos right away. Learn what you're doing and why. If you're truly interested in becoming a good musician on guitar, you can't go into it expecting it to be fast and easy. You can learn a handful of chords in a few months, well enough to strum along on some simple 3 chord rock songs without messing up too badly. And if that's all you want to do, great. But truly mastering the guitar takes YEARS, and its a neverending journey, because no matter how good you get you never run out of new things to learn about music. Resources : About.com - Beginner Guitar Lesson Archive Expertvillage.com - Videos OnLearn the Math of an A-Minor Guitar Chord Learn Various Guitars and Rythems Also you can find teaching Guitar for beginners on YouTube, and if you have iTunes, there are plenty of Podcasts which you can learn from. Hope this will help you ............... |
