My car insurance policy is due and I need some advice.
Basically, the cheapest quote I got is with bell.co.uk, they offer this 10 month bonus acccelerator thing which basically works out at a 10 month policy but I get another years NCB in the space of 10 month instead of the full 12. Basically I'll be paying £850~ for 10 month policy £1000~ for 12 month policy (give or take about £50-£75) And I'm wondering whether to go for the 10month or the 12month. Will definitely be getting a new car because this car is so expensive to insure especially for the power. |

We get NCB, which is no claims discount. You get one NCB for every year you do not have a claim/accident.
The 10 month accelerator basically allows you to get a full years 1NCB in the space of 10 months instead of 12. It's for those who are trying to build up their no claims discount. I'm just debating whether I should just wait until I'm 21 before getting any insurance and just leave the car uninsured and off the road since it'll be a lot cheaper when I'm 21 as I'm 21 on the 13th Sept, and my car policy runs out on the 18th this month. So just under a month without a car. |

Your insurance is not likely to be substantialy cheaper once you hit 21.
There seems to be 2 magic numbers with regards insurance - 25 & 35. Another years NCB is probably going to make a bigger difference to your insurance - as that also indicates another year of experience on the road. If you're trying to build up NCB then might be worth going the 10 month route. |

Once you get 3yrs not claims your insurance cost will fall a lot.
I will get 3yrs no claim this Nov. When I was 20 and had insurance the first year it was a redicolous £1500 for a 1.1 Diesel 2001 Saxo [cursing] Second year with a different insurer and 1yrs no claim it dropped instantly to £1100, then again with another insurer and 2yrs no claims, dropped again to £700. Checked for this years cost using confused and the cheapest this year was a drop to £405 with 3yrs NCB, was very pleased with that. |

I have 1 under my name. I had two years no claims and then I had a shunt - totally my fault cos I was ill (never drive when your sick!) and my insurance went through the roof. Currently on one years no claims. Costing me to insure a 1.4l Fiat Punto Sporting £800 for 12 months. Oh, and I'm 22 ![]() |

I'm not sure if it is still offered but it might be worth looking at Natwest insurance. Especially if you have an account with them.
Basically, when I first started driving there was an initial 10% discount because I had a Bank Account with Natwest anyway and as well as that they did a double NCB bonus in your first year. Meaning if you managed to go one year without a claim then they would give you 2 years NCB and build from there. I'm currently 20 and have been driving for 3 years but have 4 years NCB. Which has let me get insured on a 2.0L Vectra CDX Sport for about £39 a month [thumbup] |
