Default Horrible bicycling accident (alcohol involved)
MONTERREY, Mexico (AP) -- A car plowed into a weekend bike race along a highway near the U.S.-Mexico border, killing one and injuring 10 others, police said.
The 28-year-old driver was apparently drunk and fell asleep when he crashed into the race, said police investigator Jose Alfredo Rodriguez.
A photograph taken by a city official showed bicyclists and equipment being hurled high into the air by the collision.
Rodriguez said Juan Campos was charged with killing Alejandro Alvarez, 37, of Monterrey.
Authorities said the wreck happened 15 minutes into the 34-kilometer (21 mile) race Sunday along a highway between Playa Bagdad and Matamoros, across from Brownsville, Texas.
Campos said he is an American citizen living in Brownsville. The U.S. Consulate could not immediately confirm that.
"We are looking into the incident in terms of whether American citizens were involved," Link

No he shouldn't. Not for the rest of his life... he didn't plan for that to happen. Negligence, yes, stupidity, yes ... intent, no, ... regret, hopefully.

This has to be one of the biggest loads of crap I have ever read on this forum. Driving drunk is intent, and the man is a murderer. People like you who excuse drunk drivers sicken me; I bet if you were one of those bikers, you wouldn't be so kind...[cursing]

My two little cousin's were killed by a drunk driver about 24 years back while walking across a street. They were ages 7 and 9. I rarely drink, (altho I have in excess 4-5 times) and have never been behind a wheel with any alcahol in me in my 39+ years and yet... I still disagree with you. There is a distinction between a drunk driver who causes the death of others and some person who goes out and intentionally kills someone. That's not to say that the penalties shouldnt be similiar just... they have to be viewed differently.

It's not murder, it's involuntary manslaughter. It's bloody terrible still and I'm not defending him but you're wrong.

Unbelievable picture [shocked]

And I do agree that, while terrible, this was an accident and not murder. The guy is a retard, and should definitely go to prison, but life WITH the possibility of parole is probably the most likely sentence.

Thats stupid. He willingly got drunk and willingly got behind the wheel. He should rot in jail for the rest of his life.

Technically having two beers could make you blow over a .08 BAC, which is legally defined as "drunk." This guy is a different story, but classifying someone as "drunk" when driving is a slippery slope when you consider how few beers it takes to blow over.

Regardless of how many you've had, if you blow a 0.08 (or whatever it is where you are), you are legally drunk and should be prosecuted. There should never be leeway in DUI cases. Its a serious crime and should be treated as such.

As for this guy, he should be put away for a long time. No sympathy for drunk drivers. [cursing]

If a .08 is defined as legally drunk, then alcohol should be illegal and not served in restaurants. The lunacy of how few beers is actually needed to throw your ass in jail is astounding. This guy killed somebody, so obviously he deserves to go to jail for a very long time. However, he was probably 3x over the legal limit.

Alcohol isn't the problem. It's how people abuse it that is.

If you know you have to drive. You should have the common sense to know when to stop drinking.

I never understood why people feel the need to drink so much they lose control of themselves. Personally, I find anything alcoholic to be repulsive.

not sure about life, but he definately needs a long jail sentence. the sad thing is, he probably has 4 or 5 dui's already. Most people who get so smashed they fall asleep at the wheel, are habitual offenders.

on the bright side, at least it didn't happen in the US, because if it did, he probably would just make bail, and go back to Mexico and you would never see him again. (happens all the time with DUI's and all kinds of crimes)

I'm sorry but blowing a .08 is not alcohol abuse. For some women, that could be a single beer.
