Ok, this is driving me insane... for the past two nights I've spent at least a total of six hours, maybe more trying to find the perfect San Diego hotel for the end of May and I'm just lost! I'm losing a lot of sleep over this and in fact tonight I'm only getting 2 hours of sleep before a 12 hour work day because I've been determined to finish my planning tonight, which I didn't! [cursing]
I'm looking for a pretty nice hotel with a max price of about $230 - $270 per night before tax. I really would love something with lots and lots of history or with amazing city or ocean views. I love city views as long as I'm on like the 20th floor, so ocean isn't a must for me. It's just a single over night stay between like May 28th and the 31st. I've been pricing check in on the 29th and check out on the 30th because I'm not sure if weekend rates would be higher. I don't mind being in the city if the area seems nice and as long as it's "kind of" close to Sea World and the Zoo since those are the two things I'm going to do while in San Diego. I don't want a hotel that lists it's self as San Diego but is 20 minutes outside the city or something. I've been really looking at the US Grant and was just about set on that hotel (really nice, huge history, price worked) but I keep hearing that it's in a "not so great" part of town. I don't mind a slightly older part of town since we're not going bar hoping or anything and probably won't actually leave the hotel anytime that night but I don't want homeless passing by the hotel and stuff like that. Some reviews make it sound like it's just the older area of town that's being turned around right now and others make it sound like homeless are all over that area. Has anyone been to the Gaslamp District of San Diego? I've also been looking at some others such as Ivy Hotel and they're very modern and upscale but they also are going for the "sexy" hotel image that seems to be popular now. I really don't want to book a hotel that has an open shower area or themed towards honeymooning couples and stuff like that. I'm going with a really good friend, but I know anything like that would just weird her out too much and wonder if I was up to something, lol. Ivy looked amazing but has their "infamous" glass wall bathrooms, in ALL guest rooms from my understanding. [cursing] Why?! Anyway, please someone help by either reassuring me that the US Grant is in a good area and the reviews are just from super uptight people that want red carpets all over the place to walk on or finding me a really unique upscale hotel that can accommodate me and a friend of the opposite sex. (I've already looked at the Marriott and Hilton and W hotel and they're priced about the same or MORE for a more "boring" business atmosphere. The W seems the least business styled out of them but I kind of want a boutique hotel if I'm paying that kind of money for one night) |

I'm actually being serious, I thought someone might live there and be able to recommend a nice place or at least give me good info on what the Gaslamp area is like. Hell, even people that have visited could at least tell me what the area is like. I can't help it but I'm slightly OCD when it comes to travel, especially when making the plans for myself and a friend. I have to research everything & find the perfect location that's nice but close to whatever event. Know walking routes for where to get a quick meal, if there is easy parking nearby, etc. I read reviews, view google maps, plan out driving directions, etc. I just need some input with San Diego. Don't forget...they'll leave the light on for ya'. |

I work a lot. I'm just about done with a 12 hour shift today which will have me hit 40 hours dead this week... Which also happened to be finals week. The week before I did 36 hours. I'm saving like crazy, not even spending $2 for something to eat on my break or something. No movies, nothing, save save save for the trip.
I'm catching a break in LA since I'm staying at my aunts so the whole trip only has one night worth of hotel, I figure I can actually afford something nice for that night. |

I heard the same; Apparently they have a huge problem where by the homeless outnumber those with homes. ![]() |

i think a rude awakening is heading his way when his purse strings are cut and he has to bottom feed at an $80 a night hotel one day [rofl] Are you planning on staying in for the night? Also, were you guys being serious about the Gaslamp district being bad or were you just BSing because you don't have any facts about it? I HAVE come across a few reviews that say it's a bad area and it does have problems with vagrants but then there have been a lot of reviews that don't mention the area at all and rate the hotel really well. ![]() |

I HAVE come across a few reviews that say it's a bad area and it does have problems with vagrants but then there have been a lot of reviews that don't mention the area at all and rate the hotel really well. but it is definatly the old part of San Diego. For some reason San Diego (and this applies to surrounding cities too) likes to take the oldest places, clean them up and market them as the place to be. I never understood it myself. It's old, it's tiny (because tiny was in back in the day I guess), and it's crowded (combo of tiny + now since it's "in" it's popular). But one thing it does have going for it is it's 'lively'. Nowhere else will you find more activities going on. As a note, for all those reasons (old, tiny, 'lively') I say as far away from it as I can. Give me the big ol loneliness of the suburbs. I can't reccommend a hotel in SD, I've never been in one. |
