Default How to obtain citizenship in another country? Currently a US cit.
Kind of an odd question, I know. But, my girlfriend and I are looking into the prospect of gaining citizenship, and moving to, a European country such as England, France, or Germany.

How does one go about doing this? I googled for some information but came up short in every aspect. Has anyone here gone through the procedure? If so, how long did it take you?

Any information at all would be a lot of help. Either for temporary citizenship such as studies at a Uni, or permenant, dual citizenship.

Thanks!

The best people to speak to would be the British consulate or embassy in America. They can give you details and send you forms/information etc.

if your interested in studying

You can give them a call but it's charged through an external company who handles it at $3 a minute

Personally I would recommend you visit for a period of time before you make such a major decision, you do not need a visa if you stay less than 6 months.

Don't you mean a residence permit ?

Don't know how the rules are for other countries but for Denmark you have to live at least 9 years in the country to apply for citizenship, and since there are no double citizenship, you have to give up your US cit

if you want to come to england, just fly here as a visitor but refuse to leave. lay low for a bit, then apply for housing and benefits.

2 million people a year can't all be wrong!

To gain citizenship, I think you have to have lived, generally, in the country for a period of at least 5 years and then undergo some exam or something.

You can however, apply for residency, and get say a student visa if you wish to come to study, or permanent residency if you have needed skills or a job already lined up.

[rofl]

It would be better for his curriculum vitae if he'd arrive on some dirty ferry though.
