Default Motards
Hey,

Just wondering if any of you have a motard? I'm thinking of getting rid of my zixxer 6 and buying/building a motard.

Just after comments. Pro's and Con's.

I would go on bike forums but alot of users have strong opinions and are very close minded.

Besides its about time i got back to FM / whatever they're calling it these days lol. BRING BACK MO!

Sorry, did you just say Motard? [rofl][rofl]

Funny sounding word, I think I'll start using it as an insult to people. hahaha.

a friend of mine has one (DRZ400SM). The only think I can tell you is the bike is VERY fast around curves. Myself and other sportbikes can't touch it around curves. The bad thing about it is that its has a VERY uncomfortable seat. Its going to be much more painful to ride than your zixxer if you keep a narrow seat.

I used to have a Suzuki DR650 Dual Sport with a bit wider seat and even with that bike if I went on a ride that was more than a couple hours my A$$ would be killing me! To the point that I could not even sit down after a really long ride. It would litterly hurt!

My suggestion to you is to not skimp on the seat. Make sure it is comfortable and it will be a great ride.[thumbup]

Oh BTW for shorter rides around town there a blast to ride!

Oh, hey I meant to tell you that the VFR is awesome! Really quick, handles great, and it's comfortable to ride. Even though it's a heavy bike, it dosn't feel like it is, well, until you have to back it up a hill

Yep ive got a KTM LC4 640 SM:

Great fun and will out handle most bikes out there once it starts to get twisty.

Bad things about them:

Poor fuel tank range - get about 90 miles if you take it easy but as little as sixty if you really try

Not Comfortable - my legs go numb after about two hours, once did nine hours in one day and needed a bath before i could walk [rofl]

Servicing intervals - The Ktm is one of the better bikes for this with intervals of three thousand miles per service but some bikes have there intervals measured in hours (Remember these are essentialy compitition enduro bikes converted for fast road / track use)

Good things:

Limited top speed - i know this sounds crazy but this really is a good thing, compared to a sports bike you can have allot of fun on these bikes at relativley low speeds where your not going to worry about losing your license

Amazing handling - its been said in this thread before but once you get into the right roads these things are stunning, you WILL have the footpegs on the ground going round corners.

Constant Power curve - The joy of a big single cylinder means that the power of the engine is there from the start, no building revs, no trying to keep it in the powerband, you just twist the throttle and it pulls like nothing else

Sound - Not all people like it but i think the sound of a Supermoto with an open can is stunning, never fails to leave me with a big stupid grin on my face

Hope this helps, they will never be the most practical bikes out there but you can have allot of fun on them and get some serious miles covered if you look after them, mine is on twenty nine thousand miles after three years use!

Edit: as you can probably tell im a bit of a fanatic on these bikes, even got my cast done in the same colours as my bike when i got knocked off a year ago, lol

You only just got your Ninja and you're trading her in already.

I guess you're sick of doing 0-200 speed runs? What's your reason for changing?

Hey thanks man. Yeah it is kind of heavy for what it is. But i'll tell you one thing after riding my Hayabusa for a while when I get back on the VFR it feels light as a feather, though severely under powered. lol[thumbup]

Comfort isnt really an issue. I only ever ride to work or to the shops or something. I may do a run in the twistys on the weekends but its more like once a month and only for an hour or 2. Besides it couldnt be any more uncomfy than my mates 07 R6 bwahaha.

Nice bike Damaged. You should be able to get a long range tank. As for services, I'd definately go with a big thumper (400+ CC's, prolly a Honda XR600 then convert it).

Little_Lenny yeah I got it a while ago now. You know me lol. How often do you get to go 200+ anyway...

I hear they are faster in the twistys and most of the twisty around here have a bad surface so a Motard would kickass. Plus getting your foot out the front feels better than getting a knee down lol.

Yeah you can get a long range tank but its more weight ang its pretty bulky, i like to move around the bike as much as possible and it would make that a bit too tricky.

If you do convert one dont forget to do the suspension as well as the wheels and brakes, ive ridden a few Moto's where they havent bothered and Handling was bloody scary

I would definetly recommend taking a look at the DRZ400SM if you can, its a smaller engine than most but its a really solid engine and will go forever, plus you can get one brand new from Suzuki with all the trick parts and a full warranty to boot [thumbup]

Haha yeah gotta stiffen the suspension up a bit. Just some new springs in the front should make a big difference.

The DRZ400SM is pretty nice. Saw one in an old mag. 2007 model for $AUD7990 brand new or demo.

They dont come with braided brake lines though. Ever had a spin on a SM610?

Only ever had a go on a 450 Husky but they are great bikes, more competition focused than the KTM's and the Suzuki but obviously you need to do more work to keep them running. Every reveiw ive read on the 610 raves about them so i dont think you could go wrong with one really.
