Default Sailing!
The thread about the Maltese Falcon seems to have unearthed some sailors amongst us

So who sails? What kind of boat do/did you sail and where?

I've mostly sailed 420's in the Halifax area (Atlantic ocean). I've also sailed Albacores, Pirates and Lasers (1 and 2). Those Albacores are heavy beasts

Same experience as Zort. Lots of lakes to Sail in Minnesota. I sailed 420's for a year in High School, was an awesome experience. Here are some stock photos of the lake I sailed. Zort I give you a lot of credit for having the balls to go out in the ocean on a 420, I would be afraid of tipping over and then when the boat gets righted it would sail away with out me.

Beautiful lake Looks like its got some good wind there as well [thumbup] All this sailing talk makes me want to go out and get a boat now... Maybe in a few years

Are there any sailing certification programs in the US? We have the CYA (Canadian Yachting Association) here and they provide all the training to learn to sail. Upon completing certain requirements you are awarded a level (From White Sail level 1 up to Olympic Trainer levels). When I was in Sea Cadets we used the CYA system to learn. I got up to White Sail 3 before I aged out of the program (cadets that is). Really thinking about getting back into it and trying to get my Bronze Sail 4 or 5.

Come to the Netherlands for sailing sometime..

We have beutiful lakes, coastal water with seals, islands and of course the northsea. Due the winds and lot's of water and relative small distances to get from place A to place B makes it a nice country to do your thing...

Maybe use Google Earth and check out Netherlands [yes]

What size sailboat do you think would be necessary to be called seaworthy?

Well if it floats it's sea worthy. If you mean like in rough seas and stuff, a small Laser1 would not be advisable[rofl]

IIRC, the 470 is the Olympic sailing boat (4.7m) and they can stand up to some rough seas. It all comes down to the sailor really. If they know how to handle the boat, they should be fine in all kinds of conditions.

I personally wouldn't take out anything smaller than a 420 into choppy seas. A lake is different, but the sea is unforgiving! [help]
