Yeah, my phone will read PDF's, but there is a size limit.

Would be great if they came out with a eBook reader for it though. Wouldn't mind having that feature.
Do you know the size limit? Some of the PDF's I would like to view can be upwards of 100 pages. Most are under 10 pages though.

I think I was having trouble with PDF's over 15 or 20 pages, not sure. guess its time to navigate to the sites and try now, I'll report back in a bit.

It probably depends on how big the actual file size is, whether it has pictures embedded in it etc.

I haven't been able to find anything about the limitation. I'm not too worried though. If it's too big I'll just have to save it for a desktop. I do have a few other questions though.

Can you do file sharing over wifi or must you connect with a cable through USB?

Any printing support?

Is there an FTP client available?

I've seen there are VNC clients out there, have any of you guys tried using VNC with it? If so, how well does it work?

The closest thing I have seen to that is Google Telekinesis. Now that the SDKs are out it would be great to see support for all of those things you have listed.

Ya, the PDF viewer on the iPhone isn't Adobe's bloated program. Like I said, I figure there'll be some way to get flash onto the phone with the SDK or sometime around then. Hell, couldn't Adobe actually release their own flash viewer using the SDK? I figure we'll get all kinds of good stuff with the SDK and can't wait!

The radio's do eat up a lot of power though so I'm not sure how things like AIM will work running all the time. Someone reported testing with just a twitter app updating every 5 min or something the battery only lasted four hours. It would be nice if they could get some kind of push support with AIM but that probably requires fancy server side crap.

Edit: I'll be damned, 20 seconds after I hit post I check MacRumors and see this... http://www.macrumors.com/2008/03/18/...to-the-iphone/

Also if you don't care if it isn't perfectly brand spanking new or our thinking maybe about getting the second gen in 6 months or something anyway, you might want a refurbed one for $249. http://www.wireless.att.com/cell-pho...980100110u9400

You can get a refurbished iPhone for $249-349. And with the apple quality your refurbished phone wont be any different then a brand new phone.

Why???
I'm sure it has to do with the usual anti-apple mindset most FM users have. Personally, I think Windows Mobile sucks ass.

do you think a post like this is helpful in the slightest?

I prefer to think I'm more open minded than the other guy was. I run macs at work, and PC's at home.

Personally, as far as OS's go I like OS X. Its just so smooth. But for hardware I prefer the PC side of things, way cheaper to build an similarly spec'd system.

Why???

Top 10 reasons not to buy an iPhone

1. In a claimed "handheld computer", you actually CANNOT cut, copy, or paste text!

2. You can use your iPhone for reading PDF, Word, and Excel files(only)-- but CANNOT edit.

3. The iPhone software (is it the OS X?) takes up close to 700MB of it's capacity, leaving you dependent on additional memory for YOUR stuff.

4. The music on your iPhone CAN'T be set as a ringtone! Almost every other new handset offers this feature.

5. There is no support for Adobe Flash. Neither is there any other kind of embedded video support. Talk about great internet experience - where will video lovers go?

6. With iPhone you can click pics, but CANNOT record video. Apple doesn't seem to have heard of YOUtube!

7. Apple says between 300-400 charges the iPhone would lose battery capacity -you'll need to get the cell replaced for a fee.

8. There doesn't seem to be any option of MMS. Is this cellphone being launched in 2002?

9. The EDGE network Apple chose for the first iPhone may limit your internet browsing to Wi-Fi hot spots.

10. You can't even upgrade the first-generation iPhone to faster networks (as per current announcements). And the list goes on

Bottom line if you want a toy to play with get an iPhone

Doesn't bother me.

2. You can use your iPhone for reading PDF, Word, and Excel files(only)-- but CANNOT edit.
So what, its not an ideal platform to do that on even if they gave you that ability

3. The iPhone software (is it the OS X?) takes up close to 700MB of it's capacity, leaving you dependent on additional memory for YOUR stuff.
Still got 7.3gb for the 8gb version, and 15.3gb in the 16gb version. The 4gb version will be phased out soon

4. The music on your iPhone CAN'T be set as a ringtone! Almost every other new handset offers this feature.
Annoying, but easily worked around with itunes and any free audio editing application.

5. There is no support for Adobe Flash. Neither is there any other kind of embedded video support. Talk about great internet experience - where will video lovers go?
h264 looks stunning, not hard to convert other files to that format either. Also, Adobe has announced intentions to create a flash plugin for the iPhone. Flash is processor intensive anyways, possibly why it wasn't included.

6. With iPhone you can click pics, but CANNOT record video. Apple doesn't seem to have heard of YOUtube!
I find that video from a phone is often over-rated, specially if the CCD on the phone is a crappy one.

7. Apple says between 300-400 charges the iPhone would lose battery capacity -you'll need to get the cell replaced for a fee.
That works out to about 2 years, how long do you keep your phones before upgrading? I typically go 2 days, sometimes more without charging the phone

8. There doesn't seem to be any option of MMS. Is this cellphone being launched in 2002?
Annoying but true

9. The EDGE network Apple chose for the first iPhone may limit your internet browsing to Wi-Fi hot spots.
Apple explained this, at the time the phone was being designed the 3g chips weren't the most energy efficient devices. Apple made a choice of battery life, over features.

10. You can't even upgrade the first-generation iPhone to faster networks (as per current announcements).
Not many phones have that upgrade feature either

All in all, valid points, but many are trivial gripes.

Good...but why buy a phone with all these drawbacks for $400 when you can buy any cheaper smartphone with windows mobile or a blackberry that does everything?....because iPhone looks cool?...I found this is the only reason to buy an iphone nice looking with smooth animated software

Honestly I can't stand its touch keyboard...I have used it and it is annoying as hell unless you don't really use it a lot for messaging/email which negates the whole reason for having a smartphone..lol

I could just sense a copy and pasted list would be coming. [rofl]

The keyboard works exceptionally well after about a days or two worth of getting used to it. Although I could see how briefly using it could be frustrating at first.

To the OP, I think they still have the two week return period on the phone for you to try it out if you would like, so you can be the judge yourself. I had no intention of getting one myself originally because of the list Hannoo pasted, that was until I got my hands on one for an hour or two and put it to the test.

Same here. Once I had a little bit of time with one I was sold. Getting one this weekend. I don't like blackberries and Windows Mobile Devices seem to crash way too often. I was kind of fond of the HTC touch, but my brother had one for a week and hated it. He works for Alltel so him saying he hates their "answer to iPhone" is a pretty big deal. A friend of mine had the Tilt, and it was the same thing. He actually liked the device, but it crashed so often that he returned it within a week and is back on his blackberry.

I'll say it again, Windows Mobile sucks ass. It's slow, freezes constantly, and the interface is very PC-like. If I'm going to be on the phone and browse the web, I don't want to worry about the call dropping or the internet freezing up because WM takes up a load of resources. I've owned 4 windows mobile phones, and while the features it had were nice, the constant slowdowns and bug ridden software completely offset the benefits. The iphone's interface is genious, and I've never once had it freeze up on me. If I want to read PDFs, and make word documents, I'll use my laptop.

Just cause you don't like it doesn't mean it sucks. Since we are voting with our money Apple seems to be selling the iPhone quite well.

I'm not an Apple fanboy, I'm not blind to the phones short comings. However for me the interface with the phone, as well as its massive screen make up for just about every pitfall it has.

When the battery starts to die in about 2 years guess what, I'll be buying another phone. Probably a 2nd or 3rd generation if I like what the iPhone has to offer then.

While I think the idea of a non-replaceable battery in a phone is a pathetic idea (probably the worst thing about the iphone in fact), if you've got extremely careful soldering skills there's nothing to say you couldn't replace it yourself if you intend to keep using it.
