I was under the assumption that the Mayans didn't even actually believe the world was going to end, just that the current generation would end and usher in a new one.

I'm probably way off. Read that somewhere a while back but I have no idea if there's any truth to it.

Yes I think many of these beliefs (Greeks and Hindus believed something similar) that concern these kind of 'ages' all recognize the cyclical nature of the world in other words no end. I think this idea of the end of the world stems from our rather linear view of the world. The finally stage is just the one that the new Golden Age is born out of.
