The problem was the film is half the story. The other half you get form the books/novels. That and it didn’t really make any sense anyway. I still haven’t figured out what all the groups of dwarfs where about.

EDIT:
From what I can gather is two guys went back in time. For some unexplained reason the two cops think they are twins when one is really himself from the future. For no apparent reason a lot of different unrelated people injected him with the Karma drug. From some unknown reason someone thought he was a twin and kidnapped him so they could get his brother to play cop while the real cop was tried up. None of this bit really makes any sense or is explained.
The Rock or whatever he calls himself these days also came back in time in the process his older self was killed in the car crash by a remote bomb. This means he has to survive to the end of the film to go back in time otherwise you create a massive paradox. The strange German science family where shocked when he tried to kill himself in the plimp, he couldn’t do that as they had to send him back in time. For some reason when he went back in time he lost his memory and came up with a story for a film which was memories of events from the future.

The machine that gets power from the waves was slowing down the planet spin causing aggressive behaviour in Humans hence all the riots and violence along with other weather problems and phenomenon’s like the time rift. The machine wasnt the root cause of the violence or problems but it was the trigger for the riots with the aggressive behaviour.

How the earth slowing down its spin cause’ a time rift is never explained.
PS I never read the books. Above could be explained much better but the film is such a mess I am not going waste lots of time writing it up in detail. Perhaps the books explain more but I wouldnt bet on it.

So in other words, Richard Kelly just regurgitated a bunch of half-thought-out sci-fi garbage onto film, without an attempt to ensure that it made any kind of actual sense.

Rather like his first film.

Something about the trailer made me really want to see it. I even read the prequel novels.
