This takes the mickey doesn't it? Apparently Apple are going to charge iPod touch users £13 ( $20 ) to update their player to the latest version. It gives the following:
For a fee of $20, your iPod touch will now be equipped with a full-fledged Mail program, as well as a Maps feature that will grab your currently location using Wi-Fi triangulation. Other goodies that get bundled in with the update include web clips, stock quotes, weather information, and even the coolest app of them all, Notes. http://www.mobilemag.com/content/100/337/C14325/ ![]() The kick is that if you buy a new one today, its free! ![]() |

Way to spit on the loyal fans who adopted early. Me, I got the phone so I already had them. The new update seems to have fixed the safari crash bug for me. |

I think its fake, or is there some update which is different from the recent iTouch update. My friend updated his iTouch and seems to have gotten all those programs. And I know he didn't jail break it. |

No, it's not fake. This was announced at the Macworld keynote thing the other day. A couple people here on FM paid to have theirs upgraded, too. |

Yeah... I've got a touch & think it's rediculous they are charging early adopters for the software update, while not charging people who purchase a new one now.
If people purchasing a new one had to pay extra to get the update, then that would be fair. But best would be to just make it a free update to us early adopters! |

Ya, there is a $20 discount for iPods still in stock that don't already have the new firmware. The software update is because the iPod isn't a subscription plan. The iPhone gets free updates because Apple gets around $240 for every iPhone user just from the 2 years with AT&T. That helps cover the development cost of updates. Since the iPod Touch wasn't really a bug fix but more a "extra features", kind of like buyings games except apps there was a price put on it. I'm sure if there are bug fixes they'll be released for free.

I'd never have expected such a thing from Apple, just as I was thinking of buying an iTouch I'm sure all the Apps for the iPhone when the SDK is out will be free, they'll just have to be! |

Looks at Zune....notes MS completely supports LAST years old ass ugly model even though it is on clearance racks by offering a complete firmware overhaul to the new Zune 2.0 interface (wireless syncing, podcasts, etc)....
Looks at iPod already dominating all..and sees Apple shaft those people on the CURRENT model. I am sorry that is some WEAK ass crap. Charging for a firmware update is absurd. I can't think of anything else that does. Wow are you sure this isn't fake? Seems fake. |

Wow are you sure this isn't fake? Seems fake. ![]() Sorry, I just hate repeating myself.[rofl] ![]() http://www.cnet.com.au/mp3players/mp...9285170,00.htm At the keynote of the Macworld conference in San Francisco this week, Steve Jobs announced that a number of new and existing features present in the iPhone would be made available to owners of the very similar iPod Touch. Specifically, the Mail, Maps, Stocks, Notes and Weather applications will be available to Aussies as a software download for the iPod Touch from tomorrow, according to Apple Australia representatives. Predictably -- and as happens often at Macworld keynotes -- the crowd went wild. Then he announced the price point -- US$20 (AU$24.99 according to Apple Australia representatives) ... and the crowd went mild. Nobody was quite brave enough to boo outright, but it was pretty clear that a thousand or so brains were all thinking the same thing -- "they want HOW much"? I hope that settles it once and for all!![xmascandle] |

Hell, haven't Palm and everyone else been charging for Pocket PC and Palm apps for like... years? Maybe most of those just come from 3rd party developers and everyone's freaking out since Apple DOES develop for their own products... |

Am I the only person who thinks £13 is bloody good value for having the maps application alone?
At the end of the day, you bought the Ipod knowing it didn't have these features. You now have an OPTION to upgrade to get further usability out of your already bought ipod. Sure it;s a little crap new Ipods get this for free but you willingly bought the ipod orignially knowing what it could or couldn't do. I really don't see what all the fuss is about. |
