ADSL, ADSL MAX or ADSL2+? it makes a difference. Being 3mbps, I pressume one of the latter two which would explain that. Increased power/signal is sent down the copper resulting in wider reaching and faster sync speeds.
Max.....

Standard ADSL tops out at 2mbps (256/512/1000/2000), which would mean you also have ADSL MAX (RADSL) which tops out at 8mbps, ADSL2+ currently has the capability of 24mbps.

Up until the launch of "Max" services, the ADSL packages available from BT Wholesale were known as IPStream Home 250, Home 500, Home 1000 and Home 2000 (contention ratio of 50:1); and Office 500, Office 1000, and Office 2000 (contention ratio of 20:1). The number in the product name indicates the downstream data rate in kilobits per second. The upstream data rate is up to 250 kbit/s for all products.

Yeah i must be on Max then because it's classed as 'up to 8mb'.

so you're paying for an "up to 8Mbps" service but only achieve "2.8mb-3.5mb"

now imagine if you had a normal ADSL 2Mbps line and you see the problem the OP has.

Which is why I suggested he look into cable or ADSL2+, ADSL2+ sends a stronger signal down the line than standard ADSL, therefore enabling people further away to gain a better connection. It also doesn't suffer as much as normal ADSL to high attenuation, although it doesn't help.

BT as an ISP do not offer ADSL2+, they only offer ADSL MAX. Other ISPs can use the BT infrastructure to supply ADSL2+. In your case, Sky have installed their LLU kit into your exchange for ADSL2+ services to be available in the area.
I wasn't put on ADSL2+, just ADSL2. ADSL2+ would actually be SLOWER at the level of attenuation of the OP (and mine) than ADSL and ADSL2, which have around the same max sync speed at 60-70 dB. Plus to get ADSL2+ I'd have to pay a premium and get their 24Mbps package, even though I'd be syncing at much lower speeds.

ADSL2 actually works the best for very high attenuation, which is why I suggested that for maximum stability at a similar sync speed to ADSL. Getting ADSL2+ would be inadvisable at 62 dB attenuation, as you would sync at even slower speeds than ADSL.

AFAIK BT's ADSL Max is based on ADSL standard, but with dynamic line management, which basically caps your max sync rate at the lowest sync you managed to achieve in the first 10 days of use, which is a bit crap as you'll never be able to sync higher than your lowest sync again...

I'm not sure if they support ADSL2 but that's the one you wanna try if anything. Else you'd have to just put up with it.

It's also worth checking your socket is set up properly, and your filter is connected directly to the master BT socket. Extra phone lines and extension sockets plugged into your master socket will decrease your signal quality further, lowering your sync rate.

Try unplugging everything else in the house and just have the modem and filter plugged in, and see if that will increase your sync rate.

Well it's very embarassing on Forza 2 online today - I was lagging to everyone else like no tomorrow (literally like a bloody pinball going everywhere on the track), but for my screen, all the other opponents in my rear view mirror were just pinballs.

It's never been anywhere near this bad. I've had some bad lag in Forza 2 before, but nowhere near as bad as it has been today. [thumbdown]
