Comcast has been running a FIBER system for years now. Our main distribution is fiber from the head-end to the node. From the node its coax to the PED and from the ped to the house its coax. So comcasts system is composed of a Hybrid Fiber/Coax. Fiber Optic cable transmits data through tiny fibers of light. I suppose verizons FIOS system is gonna be fiber right to the house but im not sure. It could possibly be fiber to the PED and than copper to the house which would still give FIOS a lead over comcast as far as data bandwidth and capability. But to answer your question yes FIBER is fast but also more affective than Just running coax because no matter the length of the Wire it doesnt lose any of its signal strength where coax will.

No company would be stupid enough to invest all that money in laying fiber and then offer something slower than DSL.
Telstra...

They have new Tel$tra home communities where they charge the earth (like double or 3 times the price) for 1.5Mbit where the fibre runs to the home. You see they are marketing that fibre runs to your home so you're 1337 and in the future and all that crap, but you don't get better speeds or more data allowance than anyone else. You can get up to 24Mbit DSL over copper, and 30Mbit over their cable network... the irony.

DSL is a technology, you can run it over fibre if you want. Like it's been said, it's just a transmission medium.
