Default MS help for commercials down your throat
Oh don't you just love Redmond...

http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post...--and-drm.html

Just as you thought DRM was losing it's grip, Redmond to the rescue. It just reminded me why I left Windows... I mean, what next, being 'forced' to watch a commercial as you log into Vista or play a game, or switch on your Xbox?

Hell no, I won't stand for it, and won't buy it. Goodjob MS, you'll drive users to pirate just to avoid the ads. I'd sooner cancel my XBL subscription, or sell my 360 than deal with ad content in games.

Where does it say they're going to put ad content in games? It doesn't. It's about putting ad content in free (or nearly free) downloads. At least that's the way I read it.

I don't really see you guys' problem with it. If the ads are paying for the content so you don't have to where's the problem?

Actually the ads are not paying for the content at all. When you pay $20 for a DVD, you still have to sit and watch ads, you cannot skip them.

This technology basically ensures any content downloaded can also force the same thing. Only an utter moron would believe this will stop at DRM movies... of course it's going to end up in games and everything else. I am surprised mobile phone companies and utility companies don't force you to listen to their commercials when on hold for customer service... oh hang on...

If they really wanted to put ads in games etc. what's stopping them from doing it already? I don't see how this technology changes anything.

I've only ever come across one DVD with an unskipable ad - or any ads at all for that matter (apart from trailers) - on it, which was Lord of War. Maybe ads on DVDs are more prevalent over there, I dunno.

Trailers ARE ads,and I'd rather not have to watch them to veiw something I've paid for,I sure don'ty choose to pay for trailers and ads.

Except for the fact that they're icreasingly becoming unskipabble, and this is just nonsense further down the same path.

call me crazy zoo, but isn't your new love "apple" just as infatuated with DRM. ITUNES sure as hell is, so much so they had to be sued in the EU about it.

Apple have been trying to dump DRM for ages... don't you keep up with the tech news? iTunes plus has dumped DRM - you get 256kbps AAC songs, completely DRM free for $0.99

Seriously, DRM does not favor the publishers because it gives too much control to the hardware manufacturers. Ironically, the music publishers insisting on DRM handed Apple the monopoly it has on MP3 players to them on a plate. Now the publishers are worried, which is why NBC pulled the plug on the iTunes video store.

er... and just because I have a Mac, doesn't make me one of the Apple faithful. I just happen to like the design and the apps.

Don't jump to conclusions. A patent filing, in and of itself, is meaningless. In addition most patents never really get used anyway. Companies like Microsoft generate volumes of patents annually just to lock in potentially valuable IP. If it could come in handy or profitable, then it's patented.

i haven't used my itunes since i reformatted my comp. I have about 300 plus itunes paid downloads, will it remove the DRM on those? It's a pain to get them to play on xbox, I actually have to rip them to a cd. Anyways, if there is a way to remove the drm I'd be all for it. I'm glad itunes have abandoned drm. I will say this though, the only reason they abandoned it is because .99 cent songs have been so successful.

No it won't - it'd be nice to get them 'upgraded' for free... but at least they still all work on Apple hardware, unlike any MS DRM formats you may have purchased before the Zune was released, that won't play on that device.

You must be reading different forums, it seems more like this here:

"Microsoft cures cancer"

FM users "I liked my cancer the way it was" "MS probably caused the cancer itself"
