Default iphone update disables hacked iphones permanantly
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/7017660.stm

An Apple software update is disabling iPhones that have been unlocked by owners who wanted to choose which mobile network to use.
Earlier this week Apple said a planned update would leave the device "permanently inoperable".

Thousands of iPhone owners hacked their expensive gadget in order to unlock it for use with other mobile carriers and to run a host of unsupported programs
hack your iphone and break the T&C - and well , there you go.

Give it a week max and those iPhones will be unlocked again.

Do they make you sign an agreement not to modify the phones in any way when you sign up for them? With both my Sprint and Verizon phones I never signed any agreement not to unlock my phone.

For those with unlocked phones it is just a matter of not running the update. They do not force you to install the update at all.

The iphone EULA even using 3rd party software is deemed a clear breach and will result in the warrenty becoming null and void , direct modification of the software (needed for unlocking) is a direct breach of the EULA so ergo you no longer have a warrenty.

There is a difference between simply invalidating your warranty, which is a passive action, and having your device "permanently" and deliberately broken by a companies actions.

The update simply re-locks the phone and puts it back to factory settings if you have unlocked and/or modded it.

I'm sure when you buy the phone you agree not to alter the software, like you agree not to make illegal copies of purchased software (EULA) - so I highly doubt unlocking is permitted.

So, I was on the right tracks then.

Especially when it was determined that unlocking the device is fair use. It wouldn't surprise me to see a class action lawsuit. Might not go anywhere, but it sure seems to me that Apple is doing it on purpose.

Normally I would just laugh at the Apple fanboys who bought that stupidly overpriced fashion statement, but for some reason I feel sorry for them. Screw Apple.

You just punch in whatever the unlock code is. I did it when I got my RAZR a year ago. Did it with my Nokia when I had T-Mobile as well. Had to switch to verizon when I moved to an area that had no GSM. Not like I'll ever use my phones with another carrier or anything. I just did it because.. well.. because I can. :P

I can activate it on another provider's network if I want. I could, if Sprint let me, take my Sprint number and throw it on my Verizon phone and work off Sprint's network. Some carriers won't let you activate an unlocked phone from another provider. The whole cellphone game is bullshit if you ask me. CDMA needs to die and it should be illegal to lock a phone to a specific network. If you're that worried about customers leaving stop sucking so bad.
