Default Time for a roadtrip
I just got a call from my older brother telling me that he is leaving for Iraq within the next two weeks. Currently he is stationed in Mississippi (not sure exactly where yet) but I fully intend on going there to see him this weekend. Keep in mind I haven't seen my brother in over a year and I just met him for the first time like 3 years ago.
Any suggestions for routes to take, places to avoid, places to have fun? He said he's like an hour away from New Orleans although I am not sure of the current condition of that city.

How much time do you have to make the trip? That is a pretty long drive, I would suggest bringing someone along to help drive if possible.

I-69, to I-65, to I-59 seems like the best route.

Seems like a 17 hour trip or so. Depending on speeding I would say that it can be done in roughly 14 hours. If you don't take an extra body with you, I would plan at stopping at a hotel anywhere from Nashville to Huntsville.
Chattanooga to Chicago is a good 8 to 10 hour drive. Most that I have driven straight is 8 hours, and I can usually handle a few more hours, but I am not so sure that 14 to 18 hours straight would be any safe.

Drive safe, and have fun! These one week notice road trips on the bomb imo.

If you intend to go by yourself, split it up into 2 days. About a month ago I went from Mobile, Al to Grand Rapids. On the way up we stopped and sight-saw, and on the way back we went straight back, which took about 15 hours going 80-85 and stopping to eat and stuff. If he's an hour away from New Orleans, then the route I would take is the same red dog said. (depending if he is around the Biloxi area). There are some new casinos you can check out that have been built post-Katrina ( there's a new Hardrock cafe in one of them). New Orleans is....eh right now. Lemme know where in Mississippi he is and maybe I can be more help on what to do. Keep in mind though, most stuff on the Coast is still leveled from Katrina.

in regards to route, no idea. do you like to drive? i did a trip from milwaukee to long beach ca (~2100miles) in about 39hours total. i did stop in denver for about 7 hours of sleep and then continued on. but road trips don't bother me. [thumbup]

He's most likely in Gulfport or Biloxi, I live in NO. Red Dog has it pretty much right for major roadways. New Orleans, as long as you stick to the French Quarter, isn't bad at all. If you go outside of the Quarter that's where you'll still see a lot of damage.
