Has anyone complained and received any apologies or discounts, I just spoke to a mate who complained to Virgin and they dropped his monthly charge from £37.00 to £25.00 for 20mb, maybe I'll get letter writing before I cancel.
Im going to wait a week for the net to sort itself. Im still restricted to 512k speeds (max download speed is 64 kb/s) And as I said before I SHOULD be getting 20mb. (max download speed of 20mb is 2560 kb/s) So yeah, im running ALOT slower than i should be...

is 6.9 a constant or does it vary quite a bit
Sorry about the late reply, I get 6.9 constant, but i think i would get that even with the 16mb service, it's just determined by how far you are from the exchange.

Just upgraded to 20mb with virgin media yesterday, was previously on 2mb which I got with telewest, and i always got the full 2mb speed. But going to 20mb running speedtests i hover around 6.9mb, fair bit off 20mb huh? Do i need that modem upgrade? But anyway it may be too soon to complain, i just got it yesterday. Also another thing that annoys me is after downloading a certain amount the speed drops off loads. i.e, when i was downloading the tabula rasa beta, it was downloading at 823kb/s. then after it got past 2.2gb downloaded it dropped to 99kb/s and wont go above that. There aren't any download limits or anything so i've no idea whats up. But if I could actually download at the full 20mb, damn, thatd be awesome
speeds tests suck non of them have the bandwidth for you to get 2400kb/s downstream 95% of the time, download multiple things at the same time off the blueyonder ftp

if you know how to use newsgroups post on virginmedia.support.broadband.cable

saying what your username is , show your modem logs and say u get crap speed nearly all the time, there staff on there know what there doing and will check the ubrs you connect through to see if theres high utilisation and if there is they will change you onto a different channel or get your the proper help you need unlike the phone support that dont have a clue and just book you a tech visit.

I've had problems with them too. I had problems when they were NTL and more recently had the problem(s) explained below:

I arranged for services to be terminated in mid June as we were all moving out of the student house. Then I phoned in early June to change the date to the end of June, was told that wouldn't be a problem. Internet was then cut off at the original date, had the inconvenience of being without Internet for a couple of weeks as they could not reconnect it remotely. Received a bill last month for June (reduced rate because of half a months lost service). Received a bill the other day after I was supposed to have been disconnected over a month ago, I wasn't impressed! Phoned them up and it should now be sorted, I don't think I will ever use or recommend them to anyone ever again.

To the OP: If you haven't already done so then check out a website called "saynoto0870" which lists alternative free/standard rate numbers for lots of companies.

Cyph3r, Thanks for the link to the TCP optimizer

I tried it but it made no difference to mine, just tested and still getting under 4, I'll wait until I get the new modem and see if that makes a difference.

Cheers

its your own dam fault for joining them in the first place. no one seems to bother reasurching there isp's at all but youll spend weeks checking out what cpu to buy. this isp has never been any good and a search of any of the comunity forums whould have shown this.

leave them! the service is not going to improve no matter what rubish they tell you. it seems to be working practice by the internet service providers to blame everything from bt to your equiptment and make you waste hours of your time trouble shooting your connection when they know full well there the problem.

if you want a suggestion on a decent isp then i recomend adsl24. good service at a reasonable price.
Your talking about Virgin's ADSL service which is crap, I think the OP is talking about cable (which Ive personally had no issues with in my 2 years with them thankfully)

Admitidly telewest was a much better isp but virgin CABLE are still a fairly good isp, i'm on 20mb myself i do get capped quite often not just between 6 and 12 but 99% of the time, QUALITY stuff.

In other words FU virgin.
