Holy crap! I live a short walk away from this bridge. It's I 35W and it carries about 200,000 cars per day. The bridge just gave way and they say about 30-50 cars are in the river. The bridge itself is 64 feet above the Mississippi river. When I'm living at school, I've run under the bridge countless times and it's always seemed safe. WOW I am baffled. It was the middle of rush hour and they were doing asphalt road work on the bridge too, this is terrible.

They're also saying that all the cell phone lines in the city are jammed and there are waves of ambulances coming into the hospital with critically injured people. The bridge is about 60 years old and they're saying its about 1/2 mile long. There are divers in the water searching for people now too.

Yeah. Do you ever drive over there? Crazy, I'm wondering how much/how long it will cost to fix.

I've been out there once before, but I know a couple of people who go to the main U campus and traffic is going to be a pain in the ass to deal with. Given our state's ability to screw roads like there's no tomorrow, I have a feeling it's going to take a while to fix, both by cost, complexity and competence or lack of it from the government. Start the finger pointing in 3,2,1...

Yeh, it's sad, but a "catastrophe of historic proportions"? I wouldn't quite call it that with seven people dead, it's actually quite lucky it was so few looking at the pictures. Though I guess more could be in critical condition.

Very shocking... the bridge was last checked only in 2006 as well. Apparently they found no fault with it.

Hopefully it's not an inherent design flaw with that particular type of bridge.

Very sad for the people who lost their lives, hopefully the injured will make a full recovery.

@Tommyknocker: The mayor said its for his city.

Probably no one ever died there since the city was founded [dots]

I guess the reason will be found very quickly. Apparently the bridge had been controlled twice in the last three years and was always found to be in good shape.
Heard on the radio this morning that the middle part of the bridge fell into the water and didn't go under yet. they said its floating with cars still on top

2ND most read story on the BBC webpage.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/6927725.stm

I went down there today and everything was pretty much roped off. Saw where the bridge crushed some rail cars and saw a bunch of mangled cars from the distance, but couldn't get any good shots with my camera.
