From what you describe you have either a strained middle deltoid or strained rotator cuff (supraspinatus). I don't know what recently means, could be yesterday could be last week, but either way you're going to have to ice it down /take NSAIDs (pain-killers) until the inflammation/pain goes down then you can start swinging again. Swinging your arm in a badminton fashion won't help until the pain goes away. Hopefully once you ice/take painkillers you'll get full strength and range of motion back but if not you might have to look into getting it evaluated and treated, along with some therapy.

I'm an athletic trainer (sports medicine/physio for non-USA) so I do this for a living. PM me if you need anything else/questions.

Ah ok. It's been exactly a week now from injury, the arm feels noticably better, I can swing the arm in backhand motion (without racket), with extremely little discomfort. I still cannot lift heavy things with it though without pain.

Thanks for your help. I'll contact if I have any questions.
