The Heimlich is performed by tucking the person into yourself (i.e. like spooning), clasping your hands together with one hand in a fist and the other grabbing it or with fingers interlocked (like the United way logo) and rapidly compressing the top part of the stomach where the diaphragm is located in an upwards rolling motion with the heels of your hands. I actually took a class involving practicing it. There's also a self-Heimlich sort of thing that involves dropping your weight onto the edge of something in the same area.

Anyway, glad everything turned out OK. First step is back slaps, second is the Heimlich and finally it's finger sweeping, which I guess worked for you.

Personally i think if your wife is choking to death then however you intepret the heimlich maneouvere then thats ok, just as long as it gets the job done.

If it were my wife choking and she was seconds from death i sure as hell wouldnt care a toss whether i was doing it right or not, i would only be thinking of dislodging whatever was stuck and saving her... if youre inexperienced, shitting yourself and its life and death i say screw manuals and websites, at that moment just do whatever you have to do and do it fast,

Since now its all over It may be a good time to read on the subject 'just incase' (heaven forbid).

Well done on saving her, she is a very lucky woman.

Sounds really scary there mate. I'd be horrified if I was in the same position. [surrender]

At least she's ok.
Same here, and about the heimlich it's not supposed to break any ribs.

Unless something's changed, in recent years, never smack someone on the back that is choking, as the shock of being hit can cause whatever they're choking on to lodge farther down the throat.

Also, all you can do is keep the person calm if they can breathe. The Heimlich only works when the pathway is fully obstructed, using the air that you'll never be able to force out of your lungs on your own to dislodge whatever is there. If the pathway isn't shut, the air can just go around the obstruction and leave the victim in a worse place.

Finger sweep and Heimlich, that's it. . .no back slapping. Not to mention, if you hit the wrong vertebra, you can possibly knock the person out. Then you're really ****ed.

Or at least that's how I learned it in lifeguarding/first responder classes.

My wife complained of feeling unwell later on, and nearly had an Asthma attack too, so I phoned the NHS helpline (out of hours doctors emergency helpline) and they were horrified that the local hospital had just said to check on her in the morning.

They told me to take her to my closest Accident and Emergency asap as my repeated attempts at the heimlich manoeuvre could have left her with internal injuries and it was best to get her checked out by a Doctor.

So we both drove the 30+ miles to our local Hospital (you'd be f*cked in a life or death emergency), and they checked her out immediately, and after a thorough examination she was given a clean bill of health, Thankfully.

Her back and Sternum was quite bruised and she was sore today and just had some soup for dinner, she could'nt face any solid food.

She even went to work as usual this morning as she hates letting people down, she's a right little "trooper" and I'm immensely proud of her just carrying on as if nothing happened.

I also did my usual 12 hour day shift despite having only a few hours sleep.

At least she's ok now and its put a new perspective on life for us both, I felt so relieved that she was still alive today and bought her champagne, flowers and her favourite choccies to show her how much she means to me and that I'm ecstatic that I was able to save her when she really needed me most.

She's just amazed (I hope not too much) that I saved her over letting her croak it and me getting her life insurance of 200K.

I'm astonished that she thinks she means so little to me, I'd be heartbroken if I lost my Best friend and "soulmate".

Anyway...I might take a refresher First Aid course and get my family to come too, so that they know what to do in an emergency, should anything like this occur again (heaven forbid).

Just hope to God (if there is one) that You guys or your families never have to go through what My wife and I went through last night, We both would'nt wish that awful experience on our worst enemies. [no]

From choking to death!

No joking, I'm bloody serious!

My missus had stated when I got home from work that she did'nt fancy cooking earlier tonight, so we decided to get a "take out".

So my Daughter and I had a Doner Kebab (A rare treat for us both, as we normally eat healthy food), And my wife got a Steak bap and chips.

We got home and were just starting to tuck into the food, when my wife started to choke and gasp for breath, she very quickly "went white as a sheet", and was gasping, I grabbed her and tried to perform the "Heimlich Manoeuvre".

I tried about 3 times, while we were seated on the sofa, then She dropped to her knee's on the floor and I hit her on the back several times to try and dislodge whatever was stuck,

Then after that, and seeing her turn blue, I forced my fingers down her throat and on the second try she puked up a piece of steak about one inch long.

I saw my life flash in front of my eyes as she choked and I swear she was literally seconds from choking to death, I've never been so scared in all my life.

She's now in bed, but she has some nasty bruising on the front and back due to my frantic pummelling cos I was shitting myself and panicing like f*ck.

She's in a bit of pain so I've just phoned the local hospital to ask for advice in case my frantic squeezing and back slaps could have caused any internal injuries, But they stated that if she was still in pain tomorrow, to bring her in for a check up.

In hindsight, It seems crazy that the local chip shop would sell a 6oz steak on a bap when
the chances of you choking on it must be quite high, As its not exactly as tender as a good Sirloin, my wife has a good set of teeth too.

My wife has vowed only to eat steak with a knife and fork in future, I can't see her breaking that promise.

Its not looking too promising for next Thursday either, because a week ago she was about a second away from getting killed in a car crash, as the car she was in was pulling out of a junction and a "blind" woman driver doing 60mph proceeded to rip off the front passenger side of the car, A second earlier and the car would have hit the passenger door and probably crushed my wife to death.

Safer if she stays in bed next thursday, surrounded by pillows.
good job.

my personal advice would be to avoid meat products full stop!

once when i was around 15 i was drinking some fizzy pop and my brother made me laugh i must have inhaled a fair bit of liquid into my lungs and i was choking.
im fumbling around trying to breath and he starts whacking me on the back but it just made it worse i couldnt talk so all i could do was think "stop hitting me on the ****ing back you idiot!"
after about 20seconds i was alright though but it was still a very scary experience and not something i would want to go through again, i still get a horrible feeling to this day occasionally when im eating or drinking at the same time as watching something funny on tv etc.

I remember when I was about 4 I was sitting in the kitchen with my mother and my first step father and I was eating bread with kefir (poor ass Russian family). My mom said something funny and I choked on the food. My step father did not think twice and grabbed me by my legs, hung me upside down and gave me a good shake. Out came the food like magic. I guess it works well with kids or if you are really strong.

Well you live in Wales, so I'm guessing your a Farmer, So maybe you read it as "Sheared", but changed it to "shaved" to hide your embarrisment at being labeled as some kind of Pervert.

Maybe I'll edit the thread title, just to save you from the embarrisment of your obvious ocular deficiency.
